Main Capital Partners targets $5bn fundraise and continuation vehicle growth amid renewed LP appetite. Main Capital’s Managing Partner, Charly Zwemstra, believes that in private equity, focus outperforms diversification. He cited Thoma Bravo as a case in point, describing the software investor’s $32bn in recent fundraisings as evidence that specialist managers continue to outperform. Main Capital’s track record also suggests that focus pays off. Zwemstra reaffirmed that specialisation, not diversification, will define the next generation of outperformers in private equity. “You can grow as a specialist firm,” he said. “If you look at TA Associates, Thoma Bravo, or Veritas Capital, they’re the winners. The not-so-secretive secret that most first time founders don't know: your pitch doesn't matter. What matters when you raise your first rounds is how well you create a human connection with the partner at the VC fund. If you struggle raising early-stage money, and have met partners at real funds who are actively investing*, the first point to consider and improve is how well you connect with the VCs at the personal level. A great indication that you're *not* doing well is if meetings take *shorter* than planned, on average. Great meetings break the scheduled slot and continue longer, they also tend to include topics that are more around your personal life and past experiences - indicating that you created enough connection for the VC to want to get to know you as a person. But no one will tell you they passed because they don't like you on a personal level, so they'll instead come up with some b.s. "small market" or "come back when you have 50 customers", it's your responsibility to be honest with yourself and change something in your approach. (* topic for another post, but there are also a ton of self-proclaimed investors who aren't actively investing and are completely wasting your time)
