As the largest foodtech fundraising round in Denmark in this year, this financing will support Matr Foods European expansion and the construction of a new 4,000-ton production facility, scaling its award-winning fungi-fermented, organic meat alternatives to meet growing demand. Denmark´s Export and Investment fund (EIFO) is a new, state-owned fund which proves a single point of contact to all Danish companies in need of state financed risk capital. They have co-led with Novo Holdingsa 40m EUR raise in food tech leader Matr Foods. This comes off the back of Invest-NL from Netherlands supporting a number of scale up food technologies in their Series A/B rounds.

MATR Foods raises €40M to scale fermented plant-based meat innovations Copenhagen-based Matr Foods, a plant-based meat alternative startup, has closed a €40 million funding round — including €20M Series A equity and €20M venture debt. The round was co-led by existing investor Novo Holdings and incoming investor the Export and Investment Fund of Denmark (EIFO), alongside debt from the European Investment Bank (EIB). Founded in 2021 and led by CEO Randi Wahlsten, MATR transforms locally sourced organic ingredients like oats, split peas, lupins, beetroots, and potatoes into juicy, meaty plant-based products using traditional fungal fermentation techniques. Its flagship product, MATR Fungi Mince, is protein- and fibre-rich, low in fat, and delivers an amino acid profile similar to meat — all with a carbon footprint 94% lower than beef (1.5 kg CO2e per kg).
