🇳🇬 Strengthening Nigeria’s Food Security and Agricultural Independence At the Nigeria House of Commons, I joined my Honourable colleague, Hon. Abdullah, in supporting a motion for the ban on the importation of homegrown food commodities in Nigeria. This motion reflects our collective commitment to strengthening local agriculture, empowering farmers, and promoting food self-sufficiency. As a nation blessed with vast arable land and industrious farmers, we must take bold steps to grow what we eat and eat what we grow. However, I also raised a crucial concern — that the challenge is not only about production but also about distribution and preservation. Many farmers across rural communities suffer heavy post-harvest losses due to: 🚜 Poor road infrastructure that limits transportation of goods from rural areas to urban markets. 🏗️ Lack of efficient food storage and processing facilities. ⚙️ Absence of Food Tech Hubs where farm produce can be preserved during harvest seasons for use during periods of scarcity. In that regard, I sincerely commend the Governor of Lagos State, His Excellency, Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, for his visionary initiative in establishing a Food Tech Hub at Ketu, Lagos — which is set to be the largest in Sub-Saharan Africa. This project stands as a model of progressive governance — combining innovation, sustainability, and agricultural advancement. I therefore urge other State Governors, especially those from the Northern region — a region richly blessed and known for agriculture — to emulate this initiative. Establishing similar Food Tech Hubs will drastically reduce food wastage, increase farmers’ income, and strengthen food security across Nigeria. Together, let us build a nation that values its farmers, supports its producers, and feeds itself with pride. 🇳🇬 My Name is, Rtr. Amb. 🌾 Achieving Food Security in Nigeria: A Collective Responsibility Food security remains one of the most pressing challenges in Nigeria today not just as an economic issue, but as a social and developmental priority. To attain sustainable food security, we must look beyond short-term solutions and focus on building resilient agricultural systems that empower farmers, strengthen value chains, and promote inclusive growth. Achieving this goal requires: ✅ Investment in smallholder farmers. Providing access to quality inputs, finance, markets and extension services. ✅ Adoption of climate-smart practices. To mitigate the effects of unpredictable weather and enhance productivity. ✅ Strengthening value addition and market linkages. Ensuring farmers earn fair returns while reducing post-harvest losses (post-harvesr losses has been a major issue in agricultural sector). ✅ Collaboration across sectors. Government, private organizations, development partners, and communities all have vital roles to play. Nigeria has the potential not only to feed itself but to become a key player in Africa’s agricultural transformation if not even the world. By prioritizing innovation, sustainability, and inclusion, we can create a food secure nation where agriculture becomes both profitable and resilient. Let’s keep the conversation going. What practical steps do you think can drive food security in Nigeria today? 🌍💡 #FoodSecurity #Agriculture #Sustainability #Nigeria #RuralDevelopment #Innovation #Farmers #AgriTransformation #Agribusiness To view or add a comment, sign in

Feeding the Future: Building Africa’s Food Systems for Prosperity Across Nigeria and much of Africa, one truth keeps repeating itself — we have land, we have talent, and we have demand. Yet we still struggle to feed ourselves sustainably. Every year, food prices rise. Farmers work hard but earn little. Produce rots on the way to markets. Families spend more yet eat less. It’s not because we lack potential — it’s because our food systems are disconnected. Agriculture doesn’t stand alone. It is tied to energy, water, logistics, housing, health, and technology. When any of those fail, the entire system collapses. At Vurgati, we see food as the foundation of life and prosperity. But to feed nations, we must first redesign the system that grows, processes, and delivers food. That’s why we are creating integrated agro-ecosystems — sustainable environments where every stage of the food chain is intelligently connected. We start from the soil — using renewable energy, precision agriculture, and smart irrigation to maximize yield without harming the environment. We move through clean processing and efficient logistics — ensuring that food travels safely, affordably, and quickly from farm to table. We connect directly to the consumer — making fresh, healthy, traceable food available across communities and cities. Our vision is not just to produce food, but to build self-sustaining food systems that nourish lives, empower farmers, create jobs, and reduce dependency on imports. Because food security is not only about feeding people — it’s about freedom, stability, and dignity. Africa has the potential to become the world’s breadbasket, but it will not happen through isolated farms and short-term projects. It will happen through integration — systems that link energy, technology, transportation, and communities into one resilient network. Vurgati is building that network — from farm to fork, powered by clean energy, guided by intelligence, and designed for abundance. When food flows, life flourishes. And when systems work together, nations rise together. How do you think we can make food truly affordable and accessible for every Nigerian family? #Vurgati #Nigeria #Agriculture #FoodSecurity #Innovation #Sustainability #FutureOfAfrica #SmartFarming #IntegratedSystems #QualityOfLife To view or add a comment, sign in

#Can_Nigeria_Truly_Become_Food_Self_Sufficient? Yes, but only when we move from policies written on paper to actions that truly work on the ground. The government’s recent decision to allow duty-free importation of key food items may reduce prices for now, but it also risks discouraging local farmers who already struggle with high inputs costs, poor infrastructure, and limited access to finance. Nigeria doesn’t lack good policies, we lack alignment, consistency, and genuine inclusion. Agriculture thrives when every part of the chain works together, from production and processing to logistics, finance, and market access, and ofcourse when farmers themselves are involved in shaping the policies that affect them. To achieve true food security, we must make inputs affordable, invest in local value chains, improve logistics, strengthen extension services, support climate-smart seeds, expand irrigation, promote mechanization, involve farmers in policy development, and ensure policies are consistent and well-coordinated. Because the future of our food system won’t be built by policies written in offices but by those that work on the farm. If we get this right, Nigeria won’t just feed herself, she will feed the continent. 🌍 Shenge Z. BATN FOUNDATION REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO EMPOWERED SMALLHOLDERS FARMERS IN NIGERIA. The British American Tobacco Nigeria Foundation (BATN) has reaffirmed its commitment to empowering smallholder farmers and strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural ecosystem through the successful hosting of its 2025 Agribusiness Dialogue Session. The Dialogue Session, held biennially since 2015, has become one of Nigeria’s most influential platforms for shaping policy, sparking innovation, and mobilising stakeholders in the agrifood system. This year’s edition, held on Thursday at Radisson Blu Hotel, Lagos, focused on the urgent theme: “Is the Smallholder Farmer Really Finance-able?” One of the key myths tackled head-on during the session was the widespread belief that smallholder farming is not profitable enough to justify investment. Speakers and panelists dismissed this narrative, pointing instead to the untapped potential of smallholder farmers as engines of food security, job creation, and national economic growth. #agricnews #agricdiscussion #agricheadlinesnews #agripreneurinsightstv #rabiesprevention #agronigeria #nigeria #farmers #agribusiness To view or add a comment, sign in

Nigeria’s future depends not only on what we produce, but on how well we manage it.” One of the biggest challenges we face is post-harvest food loss. Studies show that up to 40% of fruits, vegetables, and animal products are wasted before reaching consumers—mainly due to poor storage and transportation systems. For me, as someone trained in Agricultural Biochemistry and Nutrition, this is more than a statistic—it’s a call to action. Tackling post-harvest losses means more food on our tables, more income for farmers, and stronger food security for the nation. If Nigeria can invest in cold-chain systems, improved storage, and youth-driven agribusiness models, we will not only feed ourselves but also open up global export opportunities. 💡 What practical steps do you think can reduce food waste in our country? #NutritionInNigeria #FoodSecurity #HealthyLiving To view or add a comment, sign in

🍲 Feeding Lagos, Empowering Farmers 🌾 With over 24 million people to feed daily, Lagos is Nigeria’s largest food consumer. Yet farmers often lose out to middlemen, while families face rising prices. The Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems has launched the Produce for Lagos programme — a bold plan to connect farmers directly to the Lagos market under structured agreements. ✨ What it means: Farmers gain guaranteed buyers at fair prices. Consumers enjoy more stable food costs. Post-harvest losses are reduced. Supply chains with other food-producing states are strengthened. Commissioner Abisola Olusanya says the initiative is about planning, systems, and food security — ensuring Lagos residents have affordable food while farmers earn more. If successful, Produce for Lagos could become a model for other states, showing how government-farmer partnerships can reshape Nigeria’s food future. 🔗 Read the full story via link in bio To view or add a comment, sign in

65 Years of Nourishing Generations Following the FGs recent silo revitalization agenda, the Minister of Agriculture and Food security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, through its Head of information, Mr. Ezeaja Ikemefuna said and I quote: "Out of the 17 silo complexes conceded to five private companies, only Flour Mills of Nigeria, which operates three silo complexes under the three separate Special Purpose Vehicles (SPVs), has met all conditions and is performing optimally." This has been the FMN story in most part, the unwavering commitment to building sustainable food systems for Nigeria and progressively, for Africa. For 65 years, FMN has been at the forefront of food production localization in Nigeria, consistently making investments that will reduce the Nation's dependency on imported raw materials. There are food companies in Nigeria and across the continent, Then.... There is Flour Mills of Nigeria, the very brand whose seed was sown by people of great minds.
