At #Apple it was never about what we could build, it was about what we wanted people to feel. Steve always started with emotion. What should the customer feel the first time they use it? What story are we telling through the experience? That’s the difference between shipping a product and creating a movement. The #iPod is a lasting movement- today marks the 24th Anniversary! I’ve had special moments this week at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and MIT MAD / Morningside Academy for Design as I'm on campus beginning my time as the inaugural designer in residence. The OG iPod has made some appearances! Thank you to the MIT MAD / Morningside Academy for Design, DesignPlus first year students, and Heewon Lee MIT D-Lab for continuing to remind me how the iPod brings happiness to all of you and me!

I always remember the first thing you said to me when I joined: “it’s got to feel like magic” First time anyone in business ever said anything like that to me (at least at work)

On the other hand, it is probably best not to generalize the need to produce emotion in the end user..

Congratulations on the impact you've had, and... when are you going to get back in the game?! Your story is not over, the world is always desperately short of craft-driven leaders who give a damn and show others how to

Those were happy days and wonderful memories.

24 years ago, the world started hearing a new music from an unknown object that changed everything. #ipod

Huge thank you for sharing such a powerful reminder, Tony. The best products don’t just solve problems, they stir emotion and tell a story. I remember, as if it were yesterday, that same feeling of amazement when I got my first iPod, iPhone, and Nest Thermostat. That Apple legacy, through you, still inspires how many of us think about engineering, design, experience, and building products today.

This is a great point Tony Fadell. A good team is able to have a customer facing perspective. It can be challenging as products become larger how to best balance technical aspects of projects and the customers exeperience.
