🎓 Data Science and Artificial Intelligence: the first master’s graduates at UniTS ❗ Alessio Gaia, Sara Carpenè, Luis Fernando Palacios Flores and Emanuele Ruoppolo are the first graduates of the Master’s degree program in #DataScience and #ArtificialIntelligence at the University of Trieste. “This international Master’s program, taught in English, offers training that uniquely combines two key areas of digital transformation in Italy: data science and artificial intelligence,” explains Luca Bortolussi, professor of Computer Science at UniTS. “The program brings together cutting-edge scientific topics and their applications in industrial, socio-economic, and medical fields, fostering strong connections and integration with both the business world and research.” The new graduates are in high demand in a rapidly growing professional sector: depending on the curriculum they followed, they can find employment as Data Science specialists or as Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence experts. Another possible path is the PhD program in Applied Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (ADSAI) at UniTS, which trains highly qualified researchers and specialists in these fields, focusing on applications in the natural and life sciences, industry, smart cities, transportation, economics, and society. The University of Trieste was the first - and remains one of the few universities in Italy - to offer comprehensive training in AI, from the Bachelor’s degree in Artificial Intelligence and Data Analytics to the PhD level.

Why are there (master's) theses ? what are the expectations and needs for students and universities (and for businesses in work-study programs)? How to find ways of making sense of (master's) theses, especially in the #AI ages? When I was presenting our pedagogical reflections and practices that we are having in work-study programs at UCLouvain - Université catholique de Louvain, during the #WIL25 Conference at Kristiania University of Applied Sciences, it was a nice surprise to see other perspectives (such as Mona Solvoll's) related to conceptualise theses as work-integrated learning. The conference theme was "shaping the future landscape of Work-Integrated Learning", a prospective approach that we discussed in workshops. My perspective of WIL's challenges in 10 years ? The relation with work is changing, especially with the ongoing fast transformations of the political, social and environmental contexts. Work and work organization are political, and the university, in work-study contexts, should play a role in preparing student with critical thinking of it, and perhaps help to (re)define work's role in this future society. AI in Higher Education – A Heated Debate Great opportunity today to join the ID·E Berlin seminar “Exploring Difference: How AI is Changing Higher Education” at Felleshus Nordic Embassies Berlin. As we continue developing our own #AIstrategy at German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS), it was highly valuable to gain insights into the strategic approaches of our peers. 🎓 Higher Education at the Crossroads Maintaining the balance between protecting established academic practices from disruptive technologies while simultaneously harnessing the transformative potential of #AI is an emotionally challenging task (Robin Banerjee, Professor of Developmental Psychology, University of Sussex. 🤝 Co-Creation and Mutual Learning Teachers can no longer remain comfortably ahead of their students – instead, both sides must learn simultaneously, sometimes with teachers even learning from their students (Jussi Kangasharju, Head of the Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki → AI in higher education is a heated debate. What we need now are not isolated approaches, but a continuous and open academic debate — and mutual learning across institutions. #ArtificialIntelligence #HigherEducation #IDOS #AIstrategy #AcademicDebate #MutualLearning #DigitalTransformation #AcademicExchange Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society; Jeanette Hofmann; Simona Tiribelli, PhD; Freie Universität Berlin; Fulbright Germany; DAAD Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst; British Council

🚀 Eight Projects. One AlumNode Community. Real-World Impact in Motion. Today we present the sixth project supported by #AlumNode #ProjectFunding. This one brings #philosophy, #psychology, and #computerscience into dialogue, to ask what counts as #manipulation online, why it matters #morally, and how we can measure its impact. 👉 Advancing Understanding of Morally Dubious Manipulation Dark patterns that make it hard to cancel a subscription. Recommender systems that push content based on hidden agendas. These are everyday examples of what researchers call #morally #dubious #manipulation. AlumNode members Cynthia Liem, Siddharth Mehrotra, Frederic Roemschied, and Michael Klenk are working together across disciplines to better understand how such practices work, how to define them, and what their effects are on users and society. ➡️Progress so far: ✅ A first gathering at Delft University of Technology connected the project to the "Design for Human Autonomy" initiative at the Delft Design for Values Institute and brought in researchers from other Dutch and German universities. ✅ The team organized the "Design for Human Autonomy Conference", featuring a keynote by Cass Sunstein, Harvard Law School, known for the #nudge concept. The event connected academia and public policy, including Dutch #government representatives working on #online #safety and #consumer #protection. Here is a recap of the conference: https://lnkd.in/gT25cVj7 ✅ The group began outlining a common #vocabulary for studying manipulation, taking inspiration from approaches in #misinformation #research. ✅ Plans are underway to develop a #policy #paper that links their findings to wider debates on #digital #regulation. ➡️ Why it matters: #Manipulation in #digital #environments has become a pressing issue for democracy, social media, and the rapid spread of #AI technologies. Yet research often stays siloed: philosophy provides concepts, psychology and computer science test specific cases, but the two sides rarely meet. This project bridges that #gap. For the team, the first workshops already showed the value of combining perspectives: “We found ways to integrate our different backgrounds, exactly what we were hoping to do with this project.” ➡️ What’s next: ✅ Finalize a shared-concepts glossary to wrap up the project. ✅ Build on the contacts and ideas established to pursue further joint interdisciplinary projects on digital manipulation in the future. Curious to learn more? Explore related work at TU Delft’s ongoing "Design for Human Autonomy" initiative, which also addresses questions of user agency and digital manipulation: https://lnkd.in/ejKc9kkd Next in line: a project using AI and speech recognition to help preserve native languages in Cameroon. #AlumNode #ProjectFunding #AI #Ethics #Manipulation #DigitalSociety
