The discussions focused on embedding efficiency into national and regional energy strategies — reaffirming that the cleanest and most affordable energy is the one not used. Improving energy efficiency across buildings, transport, and industrial systems remains one of the most cost-effective and immediate pathways to reduce emissions, strengthen energy security, and support net-zero ambitions. Prof. Madani emphasised the importance of rethinking energy efficiency not merely as a technical measure but as a strategic resource — vital for achieving equitable, resilient, and sustainable growth in an increasingly energy-constrained world.

🟢 At the Energy Storage Global Conference 2025 speakers shared insights on what is the role of storage in a session addressing competitive industry electrification. 🎙️Lukasz Kolinski, Director Green Transition and Energy System Integration, DG ENER, European Commission shared: "Electrification potential is high in Europe, but its growth rate is stagnating. In several regions, there is an abundance of electricity, leading to an increasing number of hours with negative prices. Flexible industries are well positioned to take advantage of these market conditions." 🎙️Marion Labatut, European Affairs Director, EDF stated: "Electrification involves both capital and operational costs. It requires upfront investment to purchase equipment and adapt industrial processes, but it can lead to significant operational savings. However, due to the complexity of energy taxation—which in many Member States continues to favour gas—the efficiency gains from electrification, particularly for high-temperature applications, do not always offset the initial investment costs." 🔶 Thank you to the session moderator Antoine Koen from Future Cleantech Architects. At the Energy Storage Europe Association event we discussed the potential and challenges of industrial #electrification and the role of #storage. a few points from the panel: - 75% of industry emissions come from the production of industrial heat - 60% of industrial heat processes can be electrified now with mature and largely EU based technologies : most of it for temperatures under 500°C => Member States need to make sure that electricity is not more taxed than gas => proper data and indicators to track electrification progress across sectors => smaller industries/SMEs could be supported with innovative financing mechanisms pooling together and reducing the cost of small loans with a State or EIB guarantee + large scale purchasing of electrification equipments giving visibility to manufacturers: an Electrification Tripartite Agrément => favouring electrification in Public procurement rules => Capex and Opex support required in many cases: looking forward to the 1st pilot auction of the decarbonisation bank => address permitting issues and the time needed for grid connections/upgrade when an industry is electrifying EDF EU Affairs Electrification Alliance

At the 21st session of the UNECE Group of Experts on Cleaner Electricity Systems, held September 29–30, in Geneva, Jim Robb, NERC president and CEO and chair of the group, led discussions on critical issues shaping the future of electricity systems. Key topics included understanding the full system costs of electricity, advancing digitalization through interoperability and open-source solutions, integrating electric vehicle charging infrastructure into energy systems, and maintaining reliability during the ongoing clean energy transition. Under Mr. Robb’s leadership, global experts, policymakers, and industry leaders shared insights and developed strategies for secure, reliable, and sustainable electricity systems. The discussions also focused on shaping the group’s 2026–2027 work plan, ensuring alignment with broader UNECE Sustainable Energy priorities. This event was a vital part of Sustainable Energy Week 2025, emphasizing collaborative efforts to strengthen grid reliability and ensure a resilient energy system. ✨ Honored to speak at the #AzerbaijanCentralAsiaGreenEnergyWeek2025inBaku, where I joined the panel discussion on Energy Efficiency - The Silent Enabler of the Energy Transition. We explored key questions for the Energy Efficiency : 🌍 What are the most effective international policy ? 💡 What is the role of waste management of existing energy resources in energy efficiency ? 📈 What are the key benefits of green and energy efficiency standards for end-users and investors? 🏦 What financing models are most effective in driving energy efficiency projects at scale? 🤝 How can governments incentivize businesses and households to adopt energy-efficient practices and technologies? It was an inspiring exchange on Energy Efficiency Big thanks to the organizers Thomas GAO , fellow speakers Fuad Bagirov, Leyla Huseynli, Suleyman Majidli for steering the dialogue. 🙏

Society's transition to net zero and growth in renewable energy generation is, for us in Development Economics, largely about the jobs and economic growth it can deliver. A back-of-a-Postit calculation I did recently indicates the current stock of UK workforce jobs in 'clean energy' is about 450,000 and through a £30bn programme of UK Government investment the aim is to almost double this over the next decade - an extra 400,000 jobs - that's 40,000 additional jobs per annum providing secure career choices and income for families and households. This is transformational economic change, an increase of about 1% to the 2025 stock of workforce jobs, and it's underway. Over the three decades I've been interested in this subject I've worked on numerous schemes, many in the Northwest, including offshore wind, onshore wind, wind farm visitor centres, hydrogen production & storage, energy from waste, minewater heat network and the Morecambe Bay tidal power proposal. The potential of tidal power is immense, and I say that from a non-technical, non-engineering, societal benefit perspective. The costs are high, and currently prohibitive, but the benefits are significant as the first tidal power scheme to be delivered will demonstrate and this could be on the River Mersey as the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority reported at the recent Place North West event in Manchester. Please reach out to me and my colleagues if you need support with estimating the wider economic benefits of renewable and clean energy schemes Steven Findlay, Gareth Brown, Simon Donlon, Ashley Bennett, James Donagh, George Whalley, Debbie Mayes #stantec #developmenteconomics #economicdevelopment #justtransition #localdevelopment
