Better writing by showing the destination first When you write for a technical audience, for every equation and proof, the reader should already know why the equation or proof is consequential. That is, write "Computer failures follow the equation Y = MX + B where you can calculate M and B from ____". Then follow up with how you know that's the right equation and the right data. I'm reminded of this because I'm reading a truly dreadful 1947 textbook on how to make nomograms. The two MIT professors who wrote it make a classic mistake: they treat their book like a murder mystery, writing endlessly of their deductions and conclusions before revealing (tada!) the murderer. So in the chapter on the theory of trapezoidal nomographs, the authors should have just said up front: a trapezoidal nomograph can solve equations of the form U + V = W and consists of three parallel lines, spaced uniformly, U, W and V (W in the middle), where the 0 points are colinear and the U and V scales are linear and the same, and the W scale is linear and 2x the U and V scales. After that, they could spend the paragraphs of details proving this holds (although it's actually obvious once you see the figure)
