[Worth reading] Hospitals are among the most complex environments, yet too often, the digital ecosystem that supports patients and staff remains fragmented 🧩 To truly deliver person-centred, connected, and sustainable care, hospitals need more than separate IT tools. They need integrated digital ecosystems that connect all touchpoints of the patient and visitor journey 🧑🦯➡️ 👩🦽➡️ 🚶♀️➡️ If you’re interested in modernizing your hospital’s experience, let’s talk → https://lnkd.in/eRQ9UmbS #InteractiveKiosks #SmartWayfinding #DigitalSignage #UserExperience #ViaDirect

The rise of on-demand care is reshaping how and where healthcare is delivered and redefining what healthcare real estate needs to look like. Patients today expect care that’s as fast, local, and convenient as the retail and e-commerce experiences they rely on every day. This shift is driving providers and investors to rethink their strategies, from site selection to facility design and long-term investment planning. In my new blog, I explore how outpatient and hybrid care models are transforming the healthcare real estate landscape and what it means for those positioning for the future. Transformation Takes Two: Building Tech Partnerships Rooted in Human Connection This week reminded us that healthcare transformation is never linear. As we continue to manage the realities of high-risk, chronic care, we’re also navigating an industry paradox — pauses on telehealth at a time when we’re actively exploring tech disruption to improve access, efficiency, and outcomes. Amid these shifts, what sustains care delivery isn’t just technology — it’s the relationships built across decades of shared purpose. From transporters and ancillary teams to physicians and leaders, every link in the care chain matters. These human connections form the backbone of healthcare transformation. At the Newsweek Digital Health Care Forum recently, one leader captured it perfectly: “The perfect health system should be as seamless as the Disney monorail.” We’re not there yet. More than half of physicians say breakdowns in data interoperability are their greatest obstacle to maximizing healthcare technologies, a HIMSS survey found. Just 23% of primary care physicians find external data easy to use, and fewer than 10% can easily access information across EHR platforms, according to research published in JAMA. Fragmented data slows care delivery, erodes patient trust, and limits clinicians’ ability to make fully informed decisions. That’s why robust partnerships between primary care providers and health tech innovators are essential. The best collaborations are built on: ⚡ Shared commitment to co-developing solutions that elevate care outcomes and experience ⚡ Pilot programs in real-world clinical settings to test, refine, and scale innovation ⚡ Open communication and continuous feedback loops that encourage adoption ⚡ Seamless integration into existing workflows to support — not disrupt — care Transformation isn’t just about technology. It’s about connection that endures through change. At the last Healthcare in Shape Symposium, Marcel Levi, president of NWO, reminded us that the purpose of healthcare design is not to create yet another device, app or gadget - it's about redesigning how care works and how it is being delivered. Designing products and services that deliver real world value. “If it’s just a new machine, a new service, a new whatever, but it’s not helpful for patients or healthcare professionals, it misses its purpose.” It’s a clear explanation of why so many healthcare innovations fail to be adopted more widely. In the Netherlands, it is estimated that 70–80% of healthcare innovations stall before entering daily practice, not because the technology doesn’t work, but because the root cause of the problem is not properly understood. Therefore, the solutions often never benefit the people they were intended to help. Levi’s argument still resonates today: design’s real power lies in rethinking systems, roles, and relationships - not just in inventing new tools. Designers use curiosity to uncover what the real issue is. By observing how care is delivered, asking questions, and continuously involving patients and healthcare professionals early, they reveal where things actually go wrong. From there, they can prototype and test small interventions, learning what truly adds value in practice. It’s a method that replaces assumptions with evidence, to create innovations that deliver value to the people who give and receive care — not just to the systems that manage it. This November, Healthcare in Shape 2025 continues that conversation — exploring how design can move healthcare innovation from pilot to practice. 🚀HealthSpace Clinics - Nurse-led Practice EHR and Practice Management 👩⚕️ After 15 years in healthtech, one lesson stands out: 👉 Clinicians don’t want healthtech. They want solutions that actually work for them. Too often, tech is built around features, not people. But in practice: • If it adds extra clicks or admin, it fails. • If it disrupts workflow, it gets ignored. • If the value isn’t obvious — saving time, reducing errors, improving outcomes — adoption never happens. What truly matters is: ✅ Designing with clinicians from day one. ✅ Embedding solutions seamlessly into existing workflows. ✅ Respecting their time, cognitive load, and realities on the ground. ✅ Building trust through transparency, safety, and evidence. After a decade and a half in this industry, I’ve seen one truth proven again and again: The best healthtech doesn’t demand change. It quietly supports it — helping clinicians focus on what matters most: their patients. #HealthTech #DigitalHealth #Innovation #Healthcare

Is virtual care failing us? On paper, virtual care promised everything: - Convenience for patients - Reduced wait times - Lower costs for providers But in reality, many clinicians and patients feel the cracks: ⚠️ Platforms overloaded with features but poor usability ⚠️ Fragmented communication across multiple tools ⚠️ Limited integration with EHRs and clinical workflows ⚠️ Burnout from managing tech instead of patient care As someone deeply involved in healthtech, I’ve seen how this gap emerges: solutions are often built for procurement checklists and not for the day-to-day needs of those on the frontlines. Does this mean virtual care is failing?🤔 Not necessarily. It means we need to rethink how we build and deploy it: - Prioritize speed, clarity, and minimal clicks - Design with utmost flexibility around clinician and patient workflows - Focus on solving one real problem well, only then expand feature-wise At least, that’s how I built The Hub by Hubspring Health - to focus on alignment, speed, and clarity. This way, the clinicians are given a single, streamlined space to collaborate, access updates, support patient care, and more. 💡 The bottom line: Virtual care might not be broken right now. But it can break trust if it doesn’t deliver value where it matters most. What’s your take? Has virtual care lived up to the promise in your experience? If so, what are the greatest challenges it currently faces, in your view? 🌐 Hospital digitalization isn't just about "implementing a system"; it's about "redesigning processes." Many institutions fail in digitalization not because of technical issues but cultural ones. The key to healthcare transformation lies not in the day the system goes live, but in the moment the team embraces it. 🧠 What is the biggest challenge facing your organization's digital transformation? #HospitalDigitalization #HealthcareTransformation #HealthIT #FutureOfHealthcare @Cerner @EpicSystems @PhilipsHealthcare
