The project, dubbed Cascade Advanced Energy Facility, will deploy 12 SMRs (Xe-100 design) in three 320 MW blocks, for a total capacity of 960 MW (all within a few city blocks). The build is expected to start at the end of the decade, with operations coming online in the 2030s. The modular approach is intended to reduce land footprint compared to traditional gigawatt-scale plants. In the initial phase, Amazon & X-Energy plan to build 4 units (320 MW) with room to scale to the full 12. The facility will tie into the existing Energy Northwest (Columbia Generating Station) infrastructure. Amazon, X-energy , Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) & and Doosan Enerbility already have a strategic agreement to deploy > 5 GW of new nuclear in the U.S. by 2039—aiming to mobilize up to $50B in public & private capital. The project underscores the growing intersection of tech, energy, and advanced nuclear, with Amazon positioning itself as a backer of carbon-free baseload power to support AI, cloud compute, and digital infrastructure.

The AI revolution needs a lot of power, and Nuclear energy is increasingly becoming the go-to choice. Amazon has unveiled plans for the Cascade Advanced Energy Facility, a 320-MW small modular reactor (SMR) project developed with X-energy and Energy Northwest in Richland, Washington. The facility will feature four Xe-100 high-temperature reactors, expandable to 12 units totaling 960 MW. Construction is set to begin by decade’s end, with operations expected in the 2030s. Designed as a compact, modular nuclear campus, Cascade will supply reliable, carbon-free power for Amazon’s growing AI operations while creating more than 1,000 construction and 100 permanent jobs. The project marks a new model for public-private nuclear collaboration, combining Amazon’s investment power with X-energy’s technology and Energy Northwest’s expertise. It will also serve as a training hub, with advanced control room simulators and partnerships at Columbia Basin College and Washington State University Tri-Cities. Backed by Amazon’s $2 billion Climate Pledge Fund, the initiative supports the company’s net-zero goals and addresses power constraints as AI and data center demands soar. Cascade strengthens Amazon’s position in the tech industry’s nuclear race, alongside Microsoft, Google, and Meta, all of which are seeking long-term clean power sources. For Energy Northwest, it builds on decades of nuclear operation and positions Washington as a clean energy leader. Meanwhile, X-energy is advancing its TRISO-X fuel facility in Tennessee and expanding partnerships with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and Doosan Enerbility, laying the groundwork for scalable, modular nuclear power in the AI era.
