Lighting Mona Lisa -2005 / 2013

I have received a number of requests concerning details of the daylighting scheme and electric lighting solutions developed to light the room of Mona Lisa at Louvre Museum in Paris (Salle des Etats). The new room was inaugurated in 2005 and I was associated with Architect Lorenzo Piqueras, winner of the architectural competition. We developed daylighting systems from the attic using double diffusion (glass and polycarbonate) and integration of electric lighting. This is a solution I also developed for a number of museums in various countries. An innovative spot lamp was also developed by SKLAER Lighting (Germany) using 7 LEDs containing an innovative system of color blending using fiber optics (see publication at Right Light 6 - Shanghai, M. Fontoynont, 2005).

In 2013, a new lamp was developed (see paper by Fontoynont et al here) benefitting from support from Toshiba Company, with 34 Leds, to offer an improvement of color control to compensate for colour shifts from glazing and fluorescent general lighting. The system was supplied with a tablet allowing Louvre Museum staff to easily adjust spectrum of light on the painting. SKLAER Lighting Germany was again invited to solve all technical solutions through its unique ability to propose high quality color blending, individual controls of spectra, dimming, framing, as well as edge adjustments.
