Maybe Jason Kelce Is What The World Needs
Today is the Super Bowl, the pinnacle of American sports. The Big Game, as it were.
Maybe you’re sick of Travis and Jason Kelce and Taylor Swift and all that. It’s been everywhere.
Will Travis and Taylor kiss after the game?
Will Travis propose on the field?
How many times will they show Taylor during the gama?
Is it all an elaborate scheme?
You can even bet at one of the many legal sports books about what color jersey Taylor will wear to the game.
This photo of Jason Kelce made the rounds last weekend. He’s taken his shirt off, but he’s still got his brother’s team colors on his hat.
If you didn’t know Jason Kelce played 13 seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles, including against his brother’s team in last year’s Super Bowl, you might think he was the Kansas City Chiefs’ biggest fan.
I know. I know. I know. It’s easy to play the cynical card and say, “Jason is just milking the opportunity to raise his own profile…”.
But I don’t think so.
What if there’s an interesting dynamic JUST under the radar that I think we can all go to school on?
I think the celebration is something else entirely.
Here’s a guy at the top of his profession, celebrating FOR HIS BROTHER like it’s the best thing ever. Jason Kelce is one of the greatest centers ever to play football, but the thing that has the world talking is how he celebrates when something good happens FOR HIS BROTHER.
There was even a video of him jumping into the crowd and slamming a beer with Buffalo Bills fans. See it here. The guy just loves it when good things happen for the people around him.
I think that’s remarkable.
A friend of mine describes the prevailing attitude in the world today as “Hooray for me and screw you!” which is exactly the opposite of what you see here.
Jason Kelce could be at home, licking his wounds or enjoying his recently announced retirement. But instead, he’s publicly celebrating his brother Travis’ success. Can you imagine the moment on the field if the Chiefs win the game tonight?
That’s an example we can all learn from.
How much better would the world be if we took the chance to celebrate with and for the people that matter to us?
When was the last time you were this excited over someone else’s success? I know it’s been a while for me…but I’m inspired by what Jason Kelce did a few weekends ago.
Let’s take it even further. What if we celebrate that when something good happens to our rivals, too? You know that person who is constantly at your heels, trying to beat you every day. What if you celebrated their wins as hard as you celebrate your own?
Gratitude is a practice that consistently rewires neural pathways, leading to better decisions, more optimism, and an outlook that makes things possible. Celebrating other’s success multiplies that process and demands that we see the glass as half full.
Here’s my challenge: Make a short list of the people whose wins you will celebrate this week. Maybe three or four people. Then go all in when they win. Try making as big a deal out of it as you had won yourself.
It will feel great. And you’ll be doing yourself a giant service as well.
I want to live in a world filled with Jason Kelces. How about you?
