Our Heart Knows
“Our heart knows what our mind has forgotten.. it knows the sacred that is within all that exists, and through a depth of feeling we can once again experience this connection, this belonging.” — Llewellyn Vaughan-Lee
In the midst of overwhelm, as multiple stressors are mounting and weighing down on us, we can become easily distracted and forget who we really are, sacrificing our inner being to become what is expected of us by others. As we surrender to external demands, we may begin to view our life as an outside-in experience, constantly feeling controlled or victimized by our circumstances and forces beyond our control. Who we are as a spiritual being can become hidden from our consciousness, underneath layer upon layer of a lifetime of conditioning.
We experience many external pressures in our professional life, where there are often many unrealistic expectations and quotas to meet. Multiple duties and demands by our families, communities, and intimate relationships can also feel overwhelming, leading to significant dissatisfaction in every aspect of our life.
As we are caught up in a hurricane of anxious thoughts swirling around in our mind, we can become distanced from recognizing our inner spirit, even feeling its presence to guide us, or to keep us grounded in the knowledge of who we really are at our core. In this state of confusion and unhappiness, our mind has forgotten who we are at the deepest level of our being.
This may lead to feeling even more loneliness, unease, and destructive behaviors that may only increase our mental suffering. If we remain trapped in this troubled state of mind, it may seem that absolutely nothing is satisfying, leading to feeling disconnected from ourselves, our loved ones, and everyone in our surroundings. Pessimism and blaming others for our feelings can take us over, making matters even worse.
What can you do to snap out of this state of mind?
You must first recognize that you have become trapped in your thinking, which is blocking your ability to connect with your inner spirit or to even perceive life as it really is. To recognize this mental state as being destructive, allows you see options that will allow you to become present and grounded. Something as simple as “I am caught up in my thoughts again”, can interrupt this destructive mental state, allowing you a few moments of mental clarity, so you can regroup.
Your next step is listening for and feeling this powerful force within you, This force or presence within you is your inner spirit. The term “inner spirit” is synonymous with “heart” (not the organ that pumps blood throughout your body). In other words, your inner spirit is a spiritual essence that lives within you and allows you to feel deeply, arising from the inside and radiating outward toward others. It is this powerful inner force that gives life to your human body and connects you to all beings, who also have this powerful force within them, giving them life.
It is not necessary to understand the details of this infinite force in order to recognize it moving within you and giving you life. While we are living in this physical world, we are not meant to understand everything about the complexities and vastness of the universe.
You do not have to seek spirituality. At the deepest level, you are already a spiritual being who is experiencing both a human body and a mortal experience. You are not a human form in need of discovering spirituality. Your natural state is a spiritual being, clothed in a human form. You can sense this when you are not trapped in the workings of your mind or wrapped up in all of its many troubles, whether real or imagined.
Of all of the things that you may accomplish in this life, the most important of these is to know yourself and your connection to all living beings. This connection is not just within your intimate relationships, family, and friendships. You and I are connected to one another and every other living being, by this force within us, binding us all to one another. It is merely conditioning that has caused you to forget who you are. This knowledge can help you to put into perspective, your own flaws as a human being, and the flaws of other human beings as well.
There is a sacred place within where you can always retreat, when you need to remember who you are at the deepest level of your being. This force is within you, everywhere that you go.
Even if lovers, spouses, family members, friends, employers, neighbors, or government leaders let you down, hurt you, or reject you, you still are connected to this powerful force within you, and so are they (even if they do not recognize it or reject its existence). While you may feel lonely in this world, you are never really alone. This powerful, universal spirit is always with you.
Your spirit knows who you truly are and is ready at any moment to give you insights about yourself and others, including the motives behind their interactions with you. You can more easily discern truth from fiction, including a pathway forward in the midst of chaos, when you keep your mind open to your spirit, that is ever present to guide you. You only need to listen to hear or feel its gentle, peaceful guidance, to know what to do. Guidance from within is perceived in a whisper, with an accompanying knowing and certainty, that will give you a peaceful, calm sense of what to do next. If you are feeling anxious about guidance arising from within, it is your mind speaking, not your spirit.
Schedule time for yourself every day, for even a few minutes, to pause, reflect in stillness, and feel this powerful presence moving within you. Remaining present allows you to sense its powerful, unbreakable connection within you. It is always there, even when you do not recognize it, patiently waiting for you to return to yourself. Your spirit will guide you toward achievements that you could not even imagine, given the limitations of the human mind.
Your heart truly knows, what your mind has forgotten about you.
