The perks of being unlucky.
When I was a kid I dreamed about working in entertainment; and even when for 15 years I relentlessly applied for jobs in multiple companies of the industry, I never had any luck.
Instead, life kept throwing me other random learning opportunities that I gratefully took because I wanted to learn (and honestly, not to starve): Client Service, Marketing Strategy, AV Production, Product Management, Business Development, Tech Entrepreneurship, and even Education.
One day, after 15 years of getting involved in a wide range of projects and constantly getting the "you don't have 5 years of experience in entertainment marketing" speech, I realized that through all these time I had developed an even wider set of skills; and what those companies probably considered to be a “derailed career” was in fact a blessing rather than a curse.
Being part of a dozen of random projects, companies, and industries, gave me the humility to understand that every problem has a solution and that you're not likely the first human to try to find it. Also, it gave me the confindence to trust my vision when having to make strong and decisions. Moreover, it helped me build a strong network of mentors, partners, and suppliers that share my vision and work ethics.
Today I do not only work in entertainment on an everyday basis (producing documentaries with A-List creators, consulting rising sports & fitness entrepreneurs, creating content for brands, and developing new artists with music producers I used to admire); but I also have the pleasure to say that I’m helping others like me to get an opportunity at doing what they love, while building a company I care about, and doing things my own way.
That’s what entrepreneurs do. We create the world we wanna live in, and offer jobs and chances for others like us.
So I guess I'm writing this to thank all the companies that gave me an opportunity to put my vision to test, but even more to the ones who overlooked my resume (because I would probably have stopped pushing for it and settled down for a nice salary in a big company while "living the dream").
And to all of my jinxed job seekers out there, I will quote Alice Hoffman for you: "Here’s the thing about luck… you don’t know if it’s good or bad until you have some perspective."
So fight on ‘cause trust me: The harder you work, the luckier you get.
