Tech is for Everyone: Tips and Tricks for Women Pursuing Technical Roles

Tech is for Everyone: Tips and Tricks for Women Pursuing Technical Roles

From a young age, society often discourage girls from pursuing technical careers or exploring interests beyond what is considered the norm. However, as strong, intelligent, and insightful women, we have the power to break free from these constraints. It is never too late to pivot towards a technical career, and with determination and hard work, we can achieve success in any field we choose.

Why Women Should Consider a Career in Tech

Currently, women represent only around 26% of the tech workforce, according to the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT). This gender imbalance not only contributes to the gender pay gap, but also limits the potential for innovation and growth in the tech industry. A study by McKinsey & Company found that companies in the top quartile for gender diversity were 15% more likely to have above-average profitability than companies in the bottom quartile.

Additionally, more women in tech means more diverse perspectives and ideas, which can lead to more inclusive and effective products and solutions. By breaking down the gender barrier in tech, women can help to create a more equitable and innovative industry.

Many women who have non-technical backgrounds feel like they don't have the skills or knowledge to break into the tech industry. However, with the right mindset, preparation, and support, I say you can make the switch to a technical career. In this post, I'll provide some tips and suggestions for making the transition to a tech career, some tips from experience and some others from research and proven facts.

Tips for Making the Leap

1.Identify your interests and strengths🔍

Start by identifying what aspects of tech interest you the most and what skills you already have that can be transferred to a tech career. For example, if you have experience in project management or marketing, you might consider pursuing a career in product management or digital marketing.

2. Educate yourself 📚

Depending on your interests, you may need to acquire new technical skills or knowledge. Look for online courses, bootcamps, or degree programs that can help you gain the skills you need. There are also many free resources, such as online tutorials or coding communities, that can help you get started.

3. Build your network 💌

Networking is a key component of any job search, and it's especially important in tech. Attend industry events, join online communities, and connect with professionals in the field to learn more about different career paths and opportunities.

4. Seek out mentorship and support 👥

Finding a mentor or a supportive community can be a valuable resource for learning, guidance, and encouragement. Look for mentorship programs or online communities for women in tech.

5. Embrace the learning process🎉

Learning new skills can be challenging, but it's important to embrace the learning process and not be afraid to make mistakes. Recognize that learning is a continuous process, and focus on progress rather than perfection.

Making the switch from a non-technical to a technical career can be daunting, but I firmly believe it is possible. Take chances on you and go girl! 🏋🏼♀️
