When AI drives logistics forward

When AI drives logistics forward

Every morning, as I walk into the control tower of our global logistics network, I’m reminded of what it truly means to move a company like Renault Group .

Behind every vehicle delivered, there’s an invisible ballet: 100,000 parts, 4,000 suppliers, 25 plants, spread across 11 countries, all synchronized to the rhythm of human expertise and digital intelligence.

Logistics, to me, has always been about harmony in motion. But in recent years, that balance has been challenged by electrification, decarbonization, and a world that changes faster than any forecast can predict. That’s why we made a bold move: to put data and artificial intelligence at the very heart of our transformation.

Turning complexity into clarity

For us, AI isn’t an idea to talk about: it’s a tool we use, hands on, to make sense of complexity. It helps us solve the very real, everyday puzzles that our teams face on the ground.

I still remember the early discussions around OPTIM3D. “How can we fit more in a truck without adding more trucks?” someone asked in a workshop. That question led to a breakthrough: an AI system that rethinks how we load our vehicles, maximizing every cubic centimeter and reducing unnecessary trips. Fewer trucks on the road. Less CO₂. More efficiency.

Then came OPTIMROUTE, our intelligent pathfinder. Launched in 2023, it calculates the best possible routes: balancing distance, cost, and timing. What used to take hours of manual planning now happens in seconds, helping our teams make better decisions, faster.

And the story doesn’t stop there. With U-PREDICT, we can anticipate transport costs in real time. MEDIA SCREENING monitors world events to spot potential supplier risks before they disrupt production. And our AI chatbots free up time for experts to focus on what really matters: solving complex challenges.

All these tools converge inside our logistics control towers: the beating heart of our supply chain. From supplier continuity to parts delivery and finished vehicle transport, we now have a real-time view of everything that moves, anywhere in the world.

Numbers that tell a story

Between 2020 and 2024, AI helped us save €20 million and avoid 7500 tonnes of CO₂ emissions. But beyond the numbers, it transformed our culture, the way we work, helping us to better anticipate and find solutions.

I often say that logistics is the art of connecting people - from customer to provide. Thanks to AI, that art has never been more alive.

Humans and machines, working as one

None of this would be possible without a strong collaboration between our operational teams, our logistics experts, data scientists, IT specialists, Renault Digital team, and partners like CERMICS (École des Ponts ParisTech). Together, we’re blending machine learning, operations research, and generative AI to design and experiment tailor-made algorithms that fit our world, building the supply chain of tommorow

What comes next

The next frontier? Autonomous AI agents capable of orchestrating logistics tasks, learning from experience, and suggesting the best actions in real time. A system that’s not just efficient but resilient, sustainable, and human-centric.

Because at Renault Group, AI is here to help the team and give him the power to make faster, smarter, and more responsible decisions.

In the end, this revolution isn’t about machines replacing us: it’s about giving people the means to do better, every day.

These are excellent uses cases, where we see real and tangible impact. Adding intelligence "to" automation using agentic AI can drive this further.

Very impressive data Sebastien, love the way you make it real and show the true power behind AI, teams working together as make the Impossible Possible! Very curious to see what's next: The Autonomous AI agents capable of orchestrating logistics tasks, learning from experience, and suggesting the best actions in real time. A system that’s not just efficient but resilient, sustainable, and human-centric. David Wild ;-) Interesting read!
