Summary: I suppose I am proudest of the fact that, I pivoted to writing long-form stories about people living in the margins of society after an injury affected my mobility. The stories were about people and on subjects that were rarely, if ever, written about, mostly because they didn't form any interest group and were not in any newspaper's circulation area. I wrote about: > how the murder of a muslim migrant from another state and showed both prejudice for people from that region and lopsided city development. > how the capture of a crop-raiding wild elephant showed the discontent between indigenous tribes called the scheduled tribes in India and wider Indian society. > a lower caste farmer at the tail end of a river hotly contested by two states. > a very old man from a disadvantaged community whose caste-based job was taken away when the country changed after independence. > A lower caste man who spoke about his job as a Hindu priest, usually reserved for Brahmins, the highest caste. > how the built environment often exacerbates resentment and anger through the profile of a family that lived in a tony Bangalore (India) neighborhood and their domestic maid (who lived in a nearby run-down neighborhood) Up until that point as a beat reporter at Mint, I was attracted to the usual kinds of stories--big investigatives, enterprise stories, explanatory journalism--that most journalists thought would highlight their skills, their beat knowledge. But when a road accident affected my mobility, I chose to tell these stories instead. I also worked on curated newsletters, a proposed City supplement (that was sadly stillborn). In another avatar as a journalism educator, I developed and delivered a course on multimedia journalism as part of the core faculty at Asian College of Journalism, Chennai, India. I have a Master of Mass Communication degree from the University of South Carolina in the newspaper leadership track and an NYT Regional internship at The Herald Journal in Spartanburg, South Carolina (The newspaper was then owned by the NYT group).
