Circular nutrients for a sustainable Baltic Sea Region

About us

CiNURGi is a project aimed at developing a circular economy for nutrients in the Baltic Sea Region. The initiative focuses on upgrading current infrastructure and technology to enhance nutrient recovery from biomass and resource streams from agricultural, municipal, and industrial sources. The project’s goal is to facilitate efficient nutrient use and promote the use of recycled fertilizer products. The project aligns with several regional and European strategies, including: - HELCOM Baltic Sea Regional Nutrient Recycling Strategy and Baltic Sea Action Plan. - EU’s Circular Economy Action Plan under the Green Deal. - Integrated Nutrient Management Action Plan of the Farm to Fork Strategy. - EUSBSR Policy Areas Nutri and Bioeconomy. Key activities of CiNURGi involve: - Developing standards for safe and sustainable nutrient recycling. - Formulating strategies for nutrient recycling to improve regional nutrient balances. - Promoting the acceptance and use of recycled nutrients. - Exploring business opportunities in nutrient recycling. - Enhancing policy coherence in nutrient recycling in the Baltic Sea Region. The project has RISE Research Institutes of Sweden as lead coordinator, and is supported by a consortium of 24 partners and 13 associated organizations from various countries around the Baltic Sea, including Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Poland, Latvia, Lithuania, and Sweden. The project is funded by the European Union, Interreg Baltic Sea Region Programme.
