Updates from NOAA's Office for Coastal Management, an organization devoted to partnerships, science, and good policy.
About us
“Coastal management” is the term used by communities and organizations working to keep the nation’s coasts safe from storms, rich in natural resources, and economically strong. The national lead for these efforts is NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management, an organization devoted to partnerships, science, and good policy. This agency, housed within NOAA’s National Ocean Service, oversees major initiatives that include the National Coastal Zone Management Program, the Coral Reef Conservation Program, the Digital Coast, and the National Estuarine Research Reserve System. The Digital Coast is an enabling platform developed to meet the unique needs of the coastal management community. The slogan says it all—“more than just data”—since the website also delivers the tools, training, and information needed to make this data truly useful. Content comes from many sources, all of which are vetted by NOAA. The Digital Coast is managed by NOAA’s Office for Coastal Management, with input from the Digital Coast partners, a group that includes the American Planning Association, Association of State Floodplain Managers, Coastal States Organization, National Association of Counties, National Estuarine Research Reserve Association, National States Geographic Information Council, The Nature Conservancy, and Urban Land Institute. The National Coastal Zone Management Program provides the basis for protecting, restoring, and responsibly developing our nation’s diverse coastal communities and resources. Currently 34 coastal states and territories participate, with each program using planning initiatives, state and local policies, and regulatory authorities to address coastal issues. The National Estuarine Research Reserve System protects nearly 1.4 million acres—in 30 reserves located in 24 states and Puerto Rico—for purposes of long-term research, environmental monitoring, education, and stewardship. Each reserve represents a partnership between NOAA and the coastal state.

Digital Coast partner University of Maryland developed automated techniques to identify changes in wetlands, making the nation’s wetland inventory more accurate and useful. 🌾 The National Wetlands Inventory is the most comprehensive wetland geospatial data set in the U.S., but it can be costly and time-consuming to maintain. Large areas are not updated regularly and rely on decades-old data. 🗺️ To find a better method for updating the inventory, researchers compared existing wetland maps with NOAA’s high-resolution #landcover data. They then developed automated techniques to identify changes, like areas that gained or lost water. By focusing on areas with the most significant changes, researchers aim to be able to update the inventory more quickly in the future. 💡 This method of updating the National Wetlands Inventory is faster and cheaper than previous methods, providing decision-makers with better information to manage their watersheds. Across the research reserves, the long-term ecosystem monitoring program provides valuable information for communities working to safeguard their coastal resources. Wells Reserve - a team created a web application using this data to help residents understand potential impacts of flooding and storm surge. Grand Bay Reserve - this real-time data alerted managers to chemical spills from a nearby fertilizer factory. ACE Basin Reserve - managers used water temperature data to determine the right time to open the shrimp fishery. Lake Superior Reserve - teamed up with 7 other reserves to answer their pressing questions and train the next generation of research scientists through a University of Wisconsin course. Read on to get inspiration for how this data could help you and your community: https://lnkd.in/eWtVnzip #EstuariesWeek #WadeIn

From teachers to students to the entire community, the reserves are a great place to learn! 🧑🏫 Teachers, get involved in field research and bring the data back to your classroom. Students, participate in hands-on field experiences at a reserve “NERR” you. Community members, find courses that teach scientific and practical knowledge. https://lnkd.in/ewzw5Hw3 #EstuariesWeek #WadeIn

The Texas Department of Transportation maintains 38,000 miles of roads in the Austin area – many of which deal with major flooding issues. To provide better information for communities, they used elevation maps and NOAA’s land cover data to analyze a variety of flood scenarios. The analysis uncovered several bridges potentially at risk from future floods. Learn how this information can help with proactive flood response: https://lnkd.in/eRjYBdcG
