Some news: for the past five years, I've been quietly writing a book about running---what it is, why we do it, and how looking at it deeply can help us understand hard things in life. It will be out Oct 28 from Random House. The idea for the book came when I was trying to understand why my running had changed so profoundly in my mid-40s. I had been a decent marathoner in my 20s and 30s, but then somehow, at age 44, I had run a marathon in 2:29. Then I set an American Record in the 50k. I realized that I hadn’t been able to run such a fast marathon in the past because I had wanted something else. I had run a marathon at age 29 and then found myself mired in a battle with thyroid cancer. All through my 30s, I had just wanted to be like I had been before I got sick. This realization helped me understand that running has mental and emotional reverberations far beyond what I had previously thought. Eventually, I started writing a book: about why we run, about how pain works, about why we sometimes run fast and sometimes run slow. I also started to think more about my father: a profoundly complicated man who introduced the sport to me. He lived an extraordinary life: from a humble background to prominence to squalor. I’ve spent my life both trying to be like him and trying to not be like him. What emerged was a book about running—and how it helps us both escape from and hurtle toward the forces that shape our lives. It’s about connections between habits that help running and at work. And about five other runners who use the sport to process the ways that life makes us struggle. I didn’t tell many people that I was writing this book, and I never announced it. But now I can. It’s called The Running Ground, and it's out on October 28th. I hope that you will pre-order a copy and find something in it. https://lnkd.in/gYax3H_9

We're thrilled to share something we’ve poured a lot of love into—the Reader’s Guide for Your Brain on Art: How the Arts Transform Us is now available—free to download. https://lnkd.in/er3gTKgZ We created this guide as a companion to the book because with the goal of you feeling the science—not only reading about it. Our hope is that it amplifies your experience of the transformative power of the arts in your own brain and body. The guide follows the book chapter by chapter, offering prompts and practices to help you notice what’s happening inside you when you engage with the arts and aesthetics. Doodle on it, jot notes in the margins, make it your own. Whether you’re reading solo or with a book club, classroom, or team, this is about making the ideas in Your Brain on Art come alive in your daily life. We’ve been so inspired by how many of you are already using the book to spark deep conversations and actions. We hope this guide further deepens those connections—and helps you see the world, and yourself, through a whole new lens. Ready to feel the impact of art from the inside out? Enjoy! —Susan & Ivy

It’s #MentalHealthAwarenessMonth and many organizations are launching initiatives to promote employee well-being. As organizations focus on WHAT they can offer teams and employees as part of their mental health programs, some lose sense of the WHY behind these efforts. We asked Prentis Hemphill (they/them), the author of "What It Takes To Heal," about the (new) skills they think leaders should add to their toolbox as they work to support employee well-being and engagement, and strengthen organizational culture, including: 🌐 Move beyond individual well-being and look at the whole organization 🤝 Focus on trust and integrity 🫥 Emotions are not unprofessional, make room for them 🎤 Reimagine leadership and focus on care instead of power ↗️ Focus on a vision and learn to accept turbulence Read our full conversation with Prentis in the current edition of our newsletter Speaking Of….
