My new book is out - about how #Media and #Entertainment startups today are barely recognisable from even five years ago. They are leaner, more creator-economy, more global and more AI-driven. What are the secrets to #entrepreneurship in the late 2020s ? How are high-value #media businesses - #videogames, #creator, #scripted, #music, #sports - being created right now ? What is the role of #technology ? What drives value ? Is the one-person-unicorn real ? Those are the meta questions in my book, out this week with #Routledge (link in first comment). Third and last in my series on the media business. The book is a guide to entrepreneurship in entertainment today through 7 key steps: #Startup, #Ideas, #Talent, #Technology, #Engagement, #ScaleUp & #Exit. Each has two contrasting angles. First, the academic theory - disruptive innovation, dynamic capabilities - for you to deploy powerful frameworks (or just impress people in the airport lounge.) Second, useful industry practices and interviews; think #lean and #agile, how to do a business plan or run ARR or technology-based valuation methodologies. I spoke to founders and investors, and used global cases from Japan to China, SouthKorea and India, Ghana and Nigeria to (of course) SaudiArabia and UAE, Brazil and Mexico. I tried hard to avoid the biased academic journal lens that too often sees media as US owned. The story is far bigger: #cinema is growing in Indonesia - but not in Indiana. Chat GPT creator Ilya Sutskever said of the large language model: “This text is a projection of the world. What the neural network is learning is more and more aspects of people, their hopes dreams and motivations.” Understand that, and you understand 50% of content production today. Fortunes are being made,legacy businesses are holed below the water. I hope I’ve captured some of that, and that it’s a fun, globally-relevant read.
