About us
NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries serves as the trustee for a network of underwater parks encompassing more than 620,000 square miles of marine and Great Lakes waters. The network includes a system of 15 national marine sanctuaries and Papahānaumokuākea and Rose Atoll marine national monuments. Few places on the planet can compete with the diversity of the National Marine Sanctuary System, which protects America's most iconic natural and cultural marine resources. The system works with diverse partners and stakeholders to promote responsible, sustainable ocean uses that ensure the health of our most valued ocean places. A healthy ocean is the basis for thriving recreation, tourism and commercial activities that drive coastal economies.

🔔 🎂 We are celebrating an anniversary today! Close to the California mainland, yet worlds apart, Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary encompasses the ocean environment surrounding five of the eight California Channel Islands (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara). The islands' remote, isolated position at the joining of two major ocean currents creates remarkable biodiversity. 🦭 Discover a world that has been protected for current and future generations to explore, learn from, and enjoy for the last 45 years! 🤿 Can't make it for the anniversary? Hidden oases lie just off Georgia's coast—and NOAA scientists are on a mission to find them. Using non-invasive drop camera technology, the team at Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary is exploring seafloor habitats, revealing thriving communities of sponges, fish, and corals. 🎥 From research vessel R/V Gannet, the camera streams live views from the ocean floor—bringing the reef to both scientists and the public. What new discoveries are waiting just beyond the sanctuary’s borders? 🔗 Dive into the full story: https://lnkd.in/eiNVdmTK #GraysReef #OceanExploration #MarineScience #GeorgiaCoast

How do you survey one of the world’s largest marine protected areas in just two weeks? With innovation and teamwork. For the first time, NOAA divers used diver propulsion vehicles paired with closed-circuit rebreathers to cover long reef stretches within Papahānaumokuākea National Marine Sanctuary—allowing them to efficiently document nuisance algae and monitor reef health across the northern atolls in a relatively short window of time. This cutting-edge approach helps researchers detect ecosystem changes faster, supporting NOAA’s mission to safeguard sanctuary resources, bolster resilience, and guide management decisions with data. 📖 Read the #NoteFromTheField: https://lnkd.in/edTPnrYz 📸: Nick Zachar/NOAA
