🎙️ On this week's episode of the Tourism Geographies Podcast, we feature esteemed researcher Bob McKercher, who discusses his recently published article in Tourism Geographies titled "Politics of tourism in public land use management: a reflexive treatise". 💥 Key takeaways: 🔸 The politics of ‘sustainability’ are highly polarised, with stakeholder groups establishing clearly defined inter-organisational relationships or advocacy groups presenting either a weak or strong sustainability agenda. Tourism does not fit well into either group, and as such, has difficulty building trust and establishing firm alliances with either group in the corridors of power. 🔸 The issue is exacerbated by the isolated position tourism holds within the government hierarchy. Ideally, government exists to represent the needs of the people. In reality, government is organised into a series of highly fragmented ministries or departments that operate within their own silos, seek to protect their own interests and exert power over other ministries and departments. Politically, as well, they exist to represent the needs and interests of their respective stakeholder groups in the halls of power. 🔸 Ultimately, the decision to support or oppose tourism in whole or in part in protected areas and other government-owned land is a political decision that involves considering the needs of multiple competing stakeholder groups. Tourism can represent a disruptive powerful third party that can disrupt the existing power balance, and thus threaten the existing relationship among other stakeholders. 🔗 You can read the full article here: McKercher, B.
