🤖 The Leadership Charade: When AI Makes You Sound Authentic (But You're Not) Imagine streamlining annual reviews with cutting-edge AI. Sounds revolutionary, right? But at what cost to employee connection and authenticity? "I automated my team's performance reviews using AI to save time." An executive client shared this with me recently, beaming with pride at their efficiency. Their smile vanished when I asked: "But do your people feel truly seen in those reviews?" We're crossing into dangerous territory: using technology to sound authentic while skipping the human work of truly connecting with our people. This isn't about rejecting AI. It's about being intentional about what only humans can do well. 🌟 AI can craft your communications, analyze your metrics, and optimize your schedule. But it absolutely cannot: • Build genuine psychological safety • Practice radical kindness when someone's struggling • Notice the unspoken dynamics in your team • Embody the vulnerable leadership that fosters belonging The most alarming pattern I've witnessed in my executive coaching? Leaders using AI to manufacture what research calls "toxic positivity" defined as perfectly crafted, upbeat messages that lack the messy authenticity of real human connection. When our leadership becomes too polished, too perfect, we lose the beautiful imperfection that makes us human. We lose trust. Here's the paradox: As AI makes communication more efficient, authentic connection becomes more valuable. 💥 The radically kind approach: ⚡ Draft important messages yourself first - even when imperfect ⚡ Ask: "Would my team recognize my voice in this?" ⚡ Include observations that only you would notice ⚡ Share a genuine challenge you're navigating Technology is a magnificent tool. But tools should amplify our humanity, not replace it. In an AI world, your humanity isn't a leadership weakness. It's your superpower. ⚡ And, Yes!, I use AI tools every day of my work and personal life. I continue to learn every day and stay Constantly Curious. Let's learn from each other authentically. Let's Celebrate being Human as much as we celebrate new Tech

🤖🧡 Artificial Intimacy: Cure or Disease? 🧡🤖 Our human experience thrives on deep connections, a biological reality inherited from our hunter-gatherer ancestors. But with the rise of technology, we've unintentionally built invisible walls around ourselves, leading to a loneliness epidemic—one that affects nearly half of all Americans. Artificial Intimacy—a concept where AI products simulate relationships—holds the potential to alleviate loneliness. Yet, we must tread carefully. AI can mimic connections so convincingly that we may lose our capacity to form real human bonds. As someone with a background in psychology and philosophy, I foresee both a cure and a disease in this evolving landscape. AI could ease the pain caused by technological isolation, but if we rely on it as a crutch without addressing the root cause, we risk losing our ability to relate to one another as humans. It's like using painkillers for a toothache without solving the underlying issue, potentially leading to lethal consequences. Artificial relationships with AI entities can seem appealing, especially as they cater to our every desire. But this begs essential questions: Will an AI simulation hinder our capacity to connect with real humans? If our social bonding capacity breaks, will we still remain truly human? What will happen to us as a species if we disconnect at the most fundamental level? We must understand that what heals us in the short term may break us in the long term, just like the story of the old lady who swallowed a fly. While AI initially seems like a solution—a 'spider' catching the 'fly' of loneliness—it could lead to escalating problems if we don't approach it with discernment. "𝘛𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘸𝘢𝘴 𝘢𝘯 𝘰𝘭𝘥 𝘭𝘢𝘥𝘺 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘴𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘥𝘰𝘨; 𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢 𝘩𝘰𝘨, 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘢 𝘥𝘰𝘨; 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘥𝘰𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘵, 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘤𝘢𝘵 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘳𝘥, 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘣𝘪𝘳𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳, 𝘚𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘱𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘰 𝘤𝘢𝘵𝘤𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘭𝘺; 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯'𝘵 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸 𝘸𝘩𝘺 𝘴𝘩𝘦 𝘴𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘥 𝘢 𝘧𝘭𝘺 - 𝘗𝘦𝘳𝘩𝘢𝘱𝘴 𝘴𝘩𝘦'𝘭𝘭 𝘥𝘪𝘦!" Using AI as a crutch for loneliness, without addressing the root cause, risks swallowing the 'dog'—our ability to form genuine human relationships. Our responsibility as creators is immense. We need AI products that act as bridges, not barriers, to real human connection. Instead of replacing human bonds, let's use AI to enhance and support our capacity to form meaningful relationships. Let's discuss: 🤔 How can we design AI technology and products that alleviate loneliness without creating dependency? #leadership #ai #futureoftech #humanity #loneliness #technology #founders

When Allison Fine and I wrote our book on AI and Nonprofits, "The Smart Nonprofit: Staying Human-Centered in an Age of AI," we were concerned that some organizations might prioritized efficiency over relationships. As we see the amazing productivity gains that AI-infused collaboration tools (scheduling, meeting notes, email processing, etc) offer, we have to remember that they should not replace interaction and human-connection. We are facing a loneliness epidemic in the US and some experts warn that if we have over-reliance on tools - or prioritize interacting with them over humans - it could accelerate loneliness. A few areas where this could happen: -The shift from human colleagues to AI apprenticeships -The potential loss of junior-level and support roles -The challenge of integrating new employees We have to Copilot or cobot or basically use both the tools and continue to build workplace relationships to ensure success. But there is more to it. As Meg Garlinghouse discussed during her presentation at the Microsoft for Nonprofits "Global Nonprofit Leaders Summit," how important is to invest in "soft skills." I might also add that the investment should also to establish workplace norms that encourage connection and build relationships, while still leveraging the benefits of AI. (This was the topic of my other book, The Happy Healthy Nonprofit) These skills include: Communication and Interpersonal Skills Adaptability and Continuous Learning Creativity and Problem-Solving Collaboration These soft skills are seen as key to succeeding in work environment that uses AI tools. Technical skills, such as prompt engineering, alone may not suffice. We must focus on human-centric skills that can complement AI’s benefits and maintain the human element and relationships in our workplaces. #futureofwork #nonprofit #leadership https://lnkd.in/dspQA_Tr

The more #AI handles routine work, the more valuable your human connection skills become. While everyone's racing to implement the latest AI tools, they're missing a critical insight: authentic relationships are becoming the ultimate competitive advantage. In our research of 1,000+ leaders, over 20% report having zero meaningful relationships at work. Zero. We're not just automating workflows, we're accidentally automating relationships. AI-written emails, chatbot check-ins, templated responses. It's efficient, but it's creating what I call the equivalent of "relationship fast food" quick, convenient, and leaving us hungrier for real connection than before. The antidote? Meaning-FULL Connectivity™. Intentional, energizing connection that fills you up instead of draining you dry. Resistance to this shift maybe futile, but so is mindless assimilation into a purely digital workplace. The choice is clear: cultivate winning relationships at work or watch AI gradually make you and your other skills commoditized.

Call me an AI believer. I’m dazzled by the speed at which amazing new AI tools and use cases are coming to market! OpenAI’s announcement this week of their new “GPTs” promises us each the ability to have custom chatbots that do our bidding; from writing emails to planning travel to teaching us specific skills. It’s truly incredible thinking of all the routine tasks today that will soon be automated. I can’t wait for the ability to speak to web pages and SaaS apps I use and have them do their jobs for me, rather than have to type to fill out forms! I’m also especially excited about the wave of human creativity that is now starting. Even my 15-year-old is in on the act: the new chatbot he coded helps him and his friends study for history tests! Speaking of human ingenuity, I stumbled on an idea that gets points for “creativity” but a polite “no thanks” from me for practical use: Picture this: an AI personal assistant, smart enough to remember your mother’s birthday and even craft a heartfelt card on your behalf. Sounds handy, right? But pause and imagine the next scene - your mom’s AI assistant opens the card, processes the sentiment, and sends back a quick reply. It’s a wonderful relationship between two AIs, not the personal relationship we’re truly seeking. The same dynamic holds for sales emails, customer service interactions, and other communication. There is no substitute for genuine human-to-human connection! Effective AI will make us more informed and insightful. But truly exceptional AI will enhance our capacity for deep, real human connections and understanding. That’s the goal we should be aiming for!

Can AI really understand us, or does it just reflect us back to ourselves? In the age of ChatGPT and virtual “therapists”, it's easy to mistake responsiveness for empathy. But when machines echo our emotions, are we feeling seen, or simply mirrored? I was recently quoted in this article by Psychology.org, exploring the rise of artificial empathy and its implications for mental health, therapy, and human connection. We dig into questions like: • What makes empathy real and is written language the same as human interpersonal context? • How do algorithms simulate care? • Could relying on AI for emotional support deepen loneliness instead of healing it, what are the risks? This is a nuanced, timely read for clinicians, tech developers, and anyone curious about the future of relational intelligence. 👇 Read the full article: 🔗 in comments #AIandEmpathy #Psychology #MentalHealth #EMDR #TraumaTherapy #HumanConnection #ArtificialEmpathy #TherapistThoughts #EthicsInAI #AustinTherapist

The mental health crisis is a global issue affecting millions, yet access to quality care remains a significant challenge. In this landscape, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is emerging as a potential game-changer. But can technology truly help us heal our minds? The Promise of AI in Mental Health: 👉 Early Detection: AI algorithms can analyze data from social media posts, wearable devices, and even speech patterns to identify early signs of mental health conditions, potentially enabling earlier intervention and treatment. 👉 Personalized Treatment: AI can tailor treatment plans to individual needs, considering factors like genetics, lifestyle, and preferences. This can lead to more effective and engaging interventions. 👉 Accessible Support: AI-powered chatbots and virtual therapists can provide 24/7 support, reaching individuals who might not have access to traditional therapy due to cost, stigma, or geographical barriers. 👉 Reducing Stigma: The anonymity of AI interactions can encourage people to seek help without fear of judgment, potentially breaking down barriers to care. Challenges and Considerations: ➡️ Ethical Concerns: Data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the potential for misuse of AI in mental health raise important ethical questions. ➡️ Human Connection: While AI can provide valuable support, it cannot replace the empathy, understanding, and human connection that are often crucial to healing. ➡️ Regulation and Validation: The development and deployment of AI in mental health must be carefully regulated and validated to ensure safety and effectiveness. The intersection of AI and mental health is still in its early stages, but the potential for positive impact is undeniable. As we move forward, it's crucial to address ethical concerns, prioritize human connection, and ensure that AI complements rather than replaces human expertise. A GLIMPSE INTO THE FUTURE: THE INTERSECTION OF HUMANITY AND AI. As a prelude to my forthcoming book on the evolution and ethical considerations of artificial intelligence, I'm excited to share a brief excerpt that delves into the profound implications of our pursuit to create machines in our own image. "In our quest to mirror our essence within machines, we've embarked on a journey marked by both ambition and introspection. As humanity grapples with the complexities of hardship, cruelty, and an increasingly detached emotional landscape, our drive to create artificial beings that not only resemble us physically but also match our cognitive and emotional capacities has intensified. This pursuit, unveils a paradox: in our endeavor to engineer machines in our image—capable of thinking, feeling, and possibly outperforming us in the very aspects that constitute our humanity—we are forced to confront a critical reflection of our current state. The modern era's relentless pace has precipitated a noticeable erosion of empathy and emotional connectivity, as societal pressures and personal challenges cultivate a milieu where vulnerability is often shunned, and emotional detachment becomes a coveted armor. This retreat from emotional authenticity has not only strained personal connections but has also permeated societal dynamics, fostering division and misunderstanding in spaces where empathy and unity once flourished. This reflection beckons us to consider the essence of our humanity and the values we wish to propagate into the future. If we, as a species, are experiencing a dilution of our empathetic and compassionate nature, what does it mean to create machines that reflect our image? The quest to imbue AI with human-like qualities not only challenges our technological prowess but also our philosophical and ethical frameworks. As we edge closer to the horizon of AI sentience, the question emerges with increasing urgency: If we perceive ourselves as flawed or diminishing in our quintessentially human traits, do we truly desire to create machines in our likeness that can perform every task with greater speed and precision?” ENGAGE WITH THE FUTURE TODAY!
