Long-term innovation in human flourishing will not come from seeking the next Med-tech Unicorn. Planting an orchard or vineyard does not show immediate return on investment. It does, however, provide great fruit and great benefit for future generations. Our vision must be long-term. A few numbers (CDC) regarding annual economic burden of non-communicable diseases: 1. Heart disease: $219 billion 2. Pulmonary disease: $153 billion 3. Obesity: $147 billion 4. Diabetes: $327 billion 5. Mental Health: $238 billion A 2% reduction in these five disease states would save the US $21.68 billion annually. Let's not seek the next unicorn in treating disease. Let's reduce disease by 2%. A small percentage is a big number (and many, many lives). This societal pain and burden can be reduced. Both for individuals and our over-stressed healthcare systems. The vision is creating an ecosystem purposely stewarded for flourishing. One which uses all available tools we have (AI, behavioral economics, cognitive computing, social networks/social physics, neuroscience, etc.) to reduce these numbers by 2%. The focus is not an input, a tech platform, or improving a legacy model. The focus is an outcome. An ecosytem of flourishing with success measured by avoidance and reduction of disease. This innovation must be supported, resourced, and stewarded by our largest brands, most advanced tech companies, smartest scientist, and civil society. The vision must be long term and we must build to benefit future generations. Economic gain is a worthy pursuit. This is true. I would argue human flourishing is of greater value. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services recently unveiled a transformative model to test a state’s ability to improve the overall healthcare management of its population. The States Advancing All-Payer Health Equity Approaches and Development Model (“States Advancing AHEAD” or “AHEAD Model”) aims to better address chronic disease, behavioral health, and other medical conditions. Under this voluntary model, participating states will be better equipped to promote health equity, increase access to primary care services, set healthcare expenditures on a more sustainable trajectory, and lower healthcare costs for patients. It's the next iteration of the CMS Innovation Center’s multi-payer total cost of care models for Medicare, Medicaid, and dual-eligibles. States participating in AHEAD will be accountable for quality and population health outcomes while reducing all-payer avoidable healthcare spending to spur statewide and regional healthcare transformation. The AHEAD model will: ✔Focus resources and investment on primary care services, giving primary care practices the ability to improve care management and better address chronic disease, behavioral health, and other conditions. ✔Provide hospitals with a prospective payment stream via hospital global budgets, while including incentives to improve beneficiaries’ population health and equity outcomes. ✔Address healthcare disparities through stronger coordination across healthcare providers, payers, and community organizations in participating states or regions. ✔Address the needs of individuals with Medicare and/or Medicaid by increased screening and referrals to community resources like housing and transportation. States are uniquely positioned because they have existing relationships with hospitals, primary care providers, payers, local government and communities, and non-profit organizations, which can be leveraged to improve population health and advance health equity. Healthy people, healthy planet: Supporting sustainability in healthcare with the cloud: Dr Ai Lin Tan | Dr Rowland Illing Using AdaptX Adaptive Clinical Management analytics solution, built on Amazon Web Services (AWS), the sustainability team at Seattle Children's used data captured from their electronic medical systems, which includes gas flow data from their anesthesia-gas machines, to examine sources of anesthesia-gas related emissions in near real-time. Over five years, these data-driven efforts led to a 87% reduction in their anesthesia-gas related emissions, or 500,000 kg CO2e per year, without any impact in patient outcomes.
