Most people fail at change management because they make two mistakes about the fabled "comfort zone". I've been a professional coach for over two decades, and I've helped guide people through changes big and small. I've had a front row seat for watching business owners, salespeople, and entrepreneurs make changes in how they approach their work. We've always heard that you have to get out of the comfort zone to create change. And I think that's true. But here's where you can go wrong: 1️⃣ Outside of the comfort zone is not the "less comfort zone". It's downright "dis"-comfortable. We think that adopting new behaviors will just be a little different...when often the necessary behaviors and attitudes are very uncomfortable. We often underestimate the negative emotions (fear, uncertainty, anger) that will pop up. 2️⃣ It's hard to operate outside the comfort zone for very long. We like to talk down about the comfort zone. But replace the word comfort with safety and security... and you can see the challenge in going beyond it. Humans don't like being outside of safety and security so we go running back if we're away from it for too long. So a few clues I've picked up on what works: ✅Create emotional safety in one area if you want to grow in others. If you want to build your professional success, make sure your personal life is in order. Or vice versa. You can't try to fix everything at once. ✅ Incremental and steady change works. Think about how you build up a muscle. You don't go from lifting 10 pounds to 100. You add more way as you go. ✅ Switch between growth and recovery. For example, go hard on a new growth area for 3 months, and then take 3 months to let the new gains coalesce and for you to rest. These ideas aren't as sexy as the narrative that you can just dive into the deep end of change and become a new person. But I find these approaches create a longer-lasting impact. Growth doesn't happen when you're comfortable. For me, when I'm comfortable, I keep doing the same things over and over again. I revel in how well I'm doing at times. Then it hits me, I've plateaued. I assess where I am at, plan to shift, and find something challenging. Leadership is the same. Be humble, admit what you don't know, and get uncomfortable so you can grow. Here are three common obstacles to growth and how to overcome them. 1. Self-Doubt and Imposter Syndrome: Obstacle: Many aspiring leaders struggle with self-doubt and feelings of inadequacy, fearing that they don't have what it takes to lead effectively. Overcoming Strategy: Engage in self-reflection and recognize your accomplishments and strengths. Seek feedback from mentors or peers to gain perspective and build confidence. Fear of Failure and Risk Aversion: Obstacle: Fear of failure can hinder leadership growth by preventing individuals from taking risks and stepping outside their comfort zones. Lesson for the Month: 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬. My all time favourite author, Tony Robbins, once said, "Anytime you sincerely want to make a change, the first thing you must do is raise your standards." You can't keep using the same standards you've applied in the past that have given you poor results. Our outcomes are a reflection of what we believe we deserve. You set the standards for your own life. When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? One morning, I made a powerful decision: it was time to set new standards and redefine my life's trajectory. 💪 I raised the bar in the gym, pushing myself to new physical heights. 👗 I changed my wardrobe, reflecting a higher standard of self-presentation. 🤝 I carefully chose my team members, ensuring they aligned with my elevated vision. 🌟 I set a higher caliber for the people I keep close, surrounding myself with positivity and ambition. 🌱 I expanded my standards for personal growth, embracing new possibilities. Raising standards involves a conscious effort. Here are steps you can take to raise your standards: 1) 𝐒𝐞𝐥𝐟-𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: Reflect on your current standards. Evaluate your values to understand your baseline. 2) 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Pinpoint areas of your life where you want to raise your standards, such as health, relationships, career, or personal development. 3) 𝐒𝐞𝐭 𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐠𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬: Establish clear goals for each area you identified. Define what success looks like and create a roadmap to reach those goals. 4) 𝐔𝐩𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐞𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐫𝐨𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Surround yourself with positive influences and environments that support your goals. 5) 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠: Commit to learning and personal development. I have a confession about working in new domains as a software engineer... It scares the absolute crap out of me to work in something I have no experience in. Often I am my own worst enemy for this kind of thing and I'll stick to what's comfy. But... that's not the path to growth. I have proven to myself time and time again in my career that when I am put into new situations, I learn and I become successful. Losing the "expert" status sucks, but it's never killed me, and it's always resulted in a ton of growth. Here's 5 things to keep in mind for getting uncomfortable: 1 - Learning is Growth Your first 'Hello, World!' program was probably a little bit scary and exciting. You had never coded before. But that first step is where growth begins. Every time you step into a new domain, you're expanding your skillset, making you a more versatile and valuable engineer. 2 - Problem-Solving Focus Engineering is problem-solving. When you dive into an area outside your expertise, you're forced to think differently, approach problems creatively, and develop innovative solutions. This is where breakthroughs happen! 3 - Collaboration Opens Doors Stepping into a new domain means collaborating with experts in that field -- whether that means new colleagues or connections in your circle. This not only broadens your knowledge but also builds your network. Diverse perspectives often lead to the best solutions. 4 - Comfort Zone = Danger Zone This one is the hard pill for me to swallow. Staying in your comfort zone is the biggest barrier to personal and professional development. Challenges are opportunities in disguise. Day 8 – 5 Steps toward Embracing and Overcoming Your Fears Today we are going to address an often-overlooked aspect of job searching and career transition: facing personal fears. The problem is that when we avoid acknowledging our fears or taking time to address them, they will show up in an interview, the day an application must be turned in, or the first day at the new job. Fear is inevitable during a period of change. That is why, the sooner you are able to recognize and turn your fears into fuel, the sooner you will be able to start achieving your goals. Step 1: Acknowledge Your Fears - It's completely natural to feel fear during times of change. Whether it's the fear of rejection, the unknown, or even the fear of success, these feelings are valid and more common than you might think. Remember, acknowledging your fears is not a sign of weakness, but a brave first step towards conquering them. Take Action! Sometime today, set a timer for 5-10 minutes and write down every doubt or fear that you have in your head about your career transition. Step 2: Reframe Your Perspective - Instead of viewing your fears as roadblocks, try to see them as opportunities for growth. Each application, interview, or networking event is a chance to learn something new, regardless of the outcome.
