A postdoctoral scholar ("postdoc") is an individual holding a doctoral degree who is engaged in a temporary period of mentored research to acquire the professional skills needed to pursue a career path of their choosing.
In 2002, there was no organization dedicated to improve the postdoctoral experience. The NPA was established with the goal of fostering necessary improvements to the postdoctoral situation in the United States, and to tackle tough issues in
the postdoc space and achieve positive policy changes.

The postdoc council will serve to elevate the voice and input of postdocs in the implementation of initiatives by the NPA.

In January 2018, the Board of Directors announced a new organizational logo. The NPA logo seeks to highlight the potential of our members, both as scholars in their disciplines and individual leaders engaging the community
in critical discussions and advocacy initiatives pertaining to mentorship, inclusiveness, and professional development and recognition.
In 2023, a special logo was designed to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the organization.
