Championing sustainability

OCLC is committed to doing good in support of libraries

That commitment includes reducing our environmental impact and helping libraries meet their own sustainability goals. Sustainability is part of every decision—from the strategies we set to the technology we build. As members of both the library and global communities, we’re focused on delivering services that empower libraries in responsible, thoughtful ways.

Sustainability in action: how we’re making a difference

From green initiatives to renewable energy-powered offices, we’re taking meaningful steps for a sustainable tomorrow.

Creating technology with purpose

We design systems that not only support libraries—but do so responsibly. Digital communications, hybrid working, and cloud-based solutions reduce our environmental impact by cutting energy use, emissions, and resource consumption. We’ve been recognized for our progress, with multiple sustainability awards and certifications to show for it.

Supporting library innovation—and a greener environment

As libraries increasingly shift to digital content, we’re right there with them. We invest in linked data infrastructure and resource sharing technology that reduces duplication, improves discovery, and makes access more efficient—for users and the planet. Internally, our sustainability team drives awareness and action across departments. From educational campaigns to process reviews, we’re embedding sustainability into how we work every day.

Facilities that work smarter

Five global offices are powered by renewable energy. We’ve added electric car charging, green roofs, and efficient lighting to cut thousands of kilowatt hours every year. Print-on-demand practices and electronic waste recycling further reduce our material footprint.

Sustainable supply chain

We hold our partners to high standards. Supplier questionnaires and audits ensure environmental responsibility at every level of our supply chain—helping us build better practices together.

Designed for energy efficiency

At our headquarters, upgraded air systems and low-energy lighting reflect our commitment to doing more with less. These choices add up to savings, conservation, and impact.

“Sustainability is a core value of OCLC. By reducing our environmental footprint while empowering libraries, we create meaningful change for future generations.”
