The history and current status of research
In previous sections, we had an overview of the most recent and cutting-edge technologies in the field of generative AI, all developed in recent years. However, the research in this field can be traced back decades ago.
We can mark the beginning of research in the field of generative AI in the 1960s, when Joseph Weizenbaum developed the chatbot ELIZA, one of the first examples of an NLP system. It was a simple rules-based interaction system aimed at entertaining users with responses based on text input, and it paved the way for further developments in both NLP and generative AI.
