It's time for Denmark to hold the presidency of the Council of the EU 🇩🇰🇪🇺 What is this presidency, what does it mean for Denmark, and when's your country's turn?
Citizens want the European Parliament to prioritise economic and security issues. According to the latest European Parliament Eurobarometer survey, four in ten Europeans are worried about inflation and the rising cost of living, poverty and social exclusion and want more new jobs to be created. They are also concerned about the EU’s defence and security. As seen in previous surveys, the economy remains the main concern for Europeans in all age groups.

Come on in, the water is fine! 🏖️ Over 85% of monitored bathing sites in the EU are judged as excellent, and 96% meet the minimum quality standards, according to an assessment carried out by the European Environment Agency. This is thanks to systematic monitoring and management introduced under the EU's Bathing Water Directive. Happy World Environment Day! The European Parliament has approved rules to address plastic marine litter, reduce total packaging waste per capita and, by 2030, ban certain single-use plastic packaging.
A shortage of water resources is one of the most pressing issues facing Europeans. MEPs are calling for an ambitious water resilience plan that includes water efficiency targets, adequate funding and promoting digitalisation and innovation.

There's a critical need for girls and women in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector. To ensure that people have the right skills for jobs, the EU has launched a five-year plan called the European Skills Agenda. One of the goals set by this Agenda is to increase different age groups' basic digital skills up to 70% by 2025. The EU average gender pay gap was 12% in 2023. It was calculated for enterprises with 10 or more employees. Across the EU, the pay gap differs widely. It was the highest in the following countries in 2023: Latvia (19.0%), Austria (18.3%), Czechia (18.0%), Hungary (17.8%) and Germany (17.6%). Luxembourg has closed the gender pay gap. Other countries with small gender pay gaps in 2023 were: Belgium (0.7%), Italy (2.2%), Romania (3.8%), Malta (5.1%) and Slovenia (5.4%). The gender pay gap increases with age: it might increase as a result of career breaks by women, although these patterns vary between countries. The gap also differs by industry and, in 2023, it was higher in the private sector than in the public sector in the majority of EU countries.
🧑‍🔬 While in 2023, women made up 52% of of the 78.3 million people employed in science and technology in the EU, only 41% of scientists and engineers are female. Denmark has the highest representation of female scientists and engineers with 50.8%, while Hungary has the lowest at 30.7%. The European Parliament has emphasised the importance of gender equality in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, calling for increased support and initiatives.

Today we celebrate the anniversary of the EU's biggest enlargement when 10 countries joined the European Union in on 1 May 2004. This historic expansion was intended to reunite the continent after the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of the Soviet Union, marking the re-unification of Europe after decades of division. Guided by EU values, enlargement has proven to be one of the EU's most successful tools in promoting political, economic and social reforms across the continent. According to a recent Eurobarometer survey, EU citizens identified defence and security (36%) as well as competitiveness, economy and industry (32%) as the areas on which the EU should focus most in this rapidly changing geopolitical environment.
More than ever, people appreciate what they get from Europe! 🇪🇺 Over 7 in 10 EU citizens believe that their country has benefitted from being a member of the EU. This is the highest result ever recorded in a Eurobarometer survey for this question since it was first asked in 1983.

The recent European Parliament youth survey found that 42% of young Europeans (16-30) turn to social media for political and social news. Teens (ages 16-18) are leading the charge, with 45% relying on platforms for info vs. 39% of 25-30-year-olds. Gender differences also stand out: Women (46%) use social media more to stay informed than men (38%). Men use video platforms like YouTube more than women (28% vs. 18%).
ChatGPT, DALL·E, Stable Diffusion, Codex... with 57% of young Europeans using apps backed by artificial intelligence, these are just a few names that you might have heard. The European Parliament’s latest youth survey found that on average young people in Europe are embracing the capabilities of generative AI - AI systems used to create text, images or video. Numbers vary greatly, however: 🇷🇴 Romanian youth lead the way with 66% experimenting with AI, while 🇨🇾 Cypriot youth remain the most cautious at 44%. In 2024, the EU passed the AI Act – the world’s first comprehensive AI law - to support innovation while making sure that AI is developed and used under the best conditions to keep citizens safe.
The future of Europe is shaped by its young citizens. Their commitment to democratic values, openness to a European identity, their active participation in the political process and their ability to navigate disinformation will determine the strength of Europe in the years to come. To better understand the perspectives of over 76 million young people (aged 16-30) across the EU, the European Parliament conducted a Eurobarometer youth survey. The responses of more than 25,000 participants from all 27 EU member states reveal what drives, informs, and motivates Europe’s youth.
