Chemical Equation of Several Combustion Reactions

The document summarizes several common combustion reactions by providing their chemical equations. It analyzes the combustion of gasoline, LPG, kerosene, aerosol/avtur, diesel oil, and biogas/methane by determining the number of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms and writing the balanced chemical equation for each reaction. The equations show that in each case, the reactants (fuel and oxygen) fully oxidize to produce carbon dioxide and water vapor as products.

Chemical equation of several combustion reactions:

Example:

Gasoline combustion:

C8H17 + O2 CO2 + H2O

Analysis:

C = 8; H = 17; O = 81/2 + 16 = 241/2

So the equation will be:

C8H17 + 121/4O2 8CO2 + 81/2H2O

Multiplied by 4:

4C8H17 + 49O2 32CO2 + 34H2O

Other combustion reactions:

1. LPG combustion:

C4H10 + O2 CO2 + H2O

Analysis:

C = 4; H = 10; O = 5 + 8 = 13

So the equation will be:

C4H10 + 61/2O2 4CO2 + 5H2O

Multiplied by 2:

2C4H10 + 13O2 8CO2 + 10H2O

2. Kerosene combustion:

C12H24 + O2 CO2 + H2O

Analysis:

C = 12; H = 24; O = 12 + 24 = 36

So the equation will be:

C12H24 + 18O2 12CO2 + 12H2O

3. Aerosol/Avtur combustion:

C14H30 + O2 CO2 + H2O

Analysis:

C = 14; H = 30; O = 15 + 28 = 43

So the equation will be:

C14H30 + 211/2O2 14CO2 + 15H2O

Multiplied by 2:

2C14H30 + 43O2 28CO2 + 30H2O

4. Diesel oil combustion:

C13H28 + O2 CO2 + H2O

Analysis:

C = 13; H = 28; O = 14 + 26 = 40

So the equation will be:

C13H28 + 20O2 13CO2 + 14H2O

5. Biogas (and other Methane/Butane) combustion:

CH4 + O2 CO2 + H2O

Analysis:

C = 1; H = 4; O = 2 + 2 = 4

So the equation will be:

CH4 + 2O2 CO2 + 2H2O
