Investigatory Project: Intro

The document introduces two science experiments: 1. A "catsup volcano" experiment that will test if catsup can trigger a reaction with baking soda like vinegar, and determine how the reaction and color change differs from using vinegar. 2. A candy crystallization experiment that will replace the original liquid ingredients with water to test if crystallization still occurs and observe the long crystallization process.

Hazel, this is the introduction for the catsup volcano, our first option.

We have a second if this does not

work out…

Introduction:

1. Background of the study.

The original ingredients of this project are baking soda and vinegar. We replaced the vinegar
with catsup (which has vinegar) to make the eruption of the volcano red and more volcano-like.
We also added a few other ingredients that, we think, will make the reaction occur. The other
ingredients we added are water and liquid dishwashing soap, these ingredients are optional. Of
course you need a container or a place where you would want to make the ingredients,
preferably a bottle; you can decorate it and make it more volcano-like.

2. Statement of the problem. (feel free to add more)

The study will be conducted to answer the following questions:

A. Will using catsup affect the reaction or will it trigger the reaction just like vinegar will?
B. What is the difference between using catsup and vinegar besides the obvious change in
color?
C. What is the reason behind the reaction of baking soda and catsup?

3. Significance of the study (I had trouble with this one)

We wanted to find out if the amount of vinegar in the catsup is enough to trigger the reaction
with baking soda just like using regular vinegar. As we all know, vinegar is a dilute acetic
acid that reacts with baking soda to produce carbon dioxide gas and catsup contains vinegar.
The gas bubbles expand and rise through the liquid, bubbling out the catsup. That is what causes the
“eruption” so to speak. We also wanted to make an eruption more volcano-like, since catsup is red, then if
an eruption does occur it will be red.

4. Scope and limitations (had trouble here to)

Our study studies the aspect of chemical reactions that produce carbon dioxide. The production of the
carbon dioxide gas is what causes the “bubbling” effect. In theory, the reaction between baking soda and
catsup will be shorter than when using vinegar because the baking soda is just really reacting with the
vinegar in the catsup and since there is less vinegar in catsup the baking soda can react with, the
production of carbon dioxide will stop earlier compared to vinegar. The bright side is that you will get a
more volcano-like eruption because obviously its red, the color of magma or lave.

Here is the intro for the candy project if you’re interested.

1. Background of the study.
This candy is very easy to do. You just need basic kitchen ingredients and a lot of time and patience. The
candy is made by the process called crystallization. You will find out later why. This candy is made of water
and sugar (melted in the water) only, flavorings and food colors are optional. The original ingredients are
sugar and some kind of liquid that makes crystallization faster. So replaced that with water and we’ll find
out if it will work. Of course the melted sugar needs a solid substance so it can crystallize there. So dip a
stick, straw, anything clean to the mixture and it will crystallize there.

2. Statement of the problem

The study will be conducted to answer the following questions:

A. Will replacing the original liquid with water used affect the candy?
B. How long will the crystallization process last?
C. Will the candy be edible?
D. Will using water affect the crystallization process?

3. Significance of the study

This study will show you if you can or cannot make your own candy at home. It is like candy
making made easy. If you get used to it, you might even make a business out of it and
experiment with other to make it taste better. If not, it may simply be a hobby to anyone who
has a lot of time.
We will also be able to observe the process of crystallization which others rarely if not never get
to see.

4. Scope and limitations of the study

Our study tackles the aspect in science, specifically chemistry, which is the process of
crystallization. We will find out how this process works and why it happens. We find it very
amusing to study about how melted objects turn to solid without the aid of very low
temperatures that causes freezing. Basically, we wanted to see liquid turn to solid without
freezing.
The limitation is that this process is long. You need patience and a lot of time. But it will be a
rewarding experience if you are fund of learning.
