ST.
COLUMBA CATHOLIC CHURCH SAN DIEGO
June 29, 2014
Saints Peter & Paul, Apostles
A MILLION THANKS TO ALL OF YOU
I arrived at St. Columba and assumed the position of
Pastor in July 1, 2008. I was Associate Pastor at St.
Mary, National City, for five years before that. Its been
six years since that day of big change and challenge in
my life. I must admit that I had a lot of fears and insecu-
rities coming from a different cultural background and
being new in the job. But God proved His faithfulness
and made these six years fruitful, meaningful and en-
riching in my personal and priestly life. I have learned to
love the ministry in this parish and have developed
friendships with parishioners. Sometimes we cannot
avoid being attached to the people who have touched
our lives, and it is always hard to say Good-bye to
those whom we have shared many joyful and blessed
moments with. But life moves on, and we do not close
our hearts and minds to better things to come, knowing
that God is always at work in His Church. I have to leave
St. Columba to attend to other important aspects of my
priestly ministry and my personal life with my family.
When I learned that Fr. Mel Monreal will be taking my
place, I felt great relief and excitement. Fr. Mel and I
have been together in the theological seminary, and we
have become good friends, with the same pastoral and
theological orientation. I am sure that he will do great
things for St. Columba through your help and the guid-
ance of the Holy Spirit. I humbly ask all of you to con-
tinue loving and supporting St. Columba Church and
School and your new Pastor, Fr. Mel. I will consider it a
failure on my part if, after my term as Pastor of this par-
ish, you who have shown love and support during my
Pastorate will stop giving the same to your new Pastor. I
never preached that your love be directed to me person-
ally, but that all of us should direct our love to God and
His Church. Priests come and go, but parishioners stay,
because YOU are the Church and the People of God.
Please keep your love for God and St. Columba growing.
I will treasure you and all the memories in my prayers.
TO GOD BE THE GLORY, AND TO ALL OF YOU, A
MILLION THANKS FOR ALL YOUR LOVE!

Mass Intentions for the Week
Our windows tell a storythe spread of the Gospel
throughout the world. SEVENTH WINDOWSt. Boni-
face worked in the territories that are now Germany,
the Netherlands and Luxemburg. In the year 719 he be-
gan his apostolic labors at the command of Pope Greg-
ory II. The church proclaims that his zeal called a multi-
tude of people. One day he started to chop down an oak
tree considered sacred by the pagan Germans, and a
strong wind suddenly blew the tree down. When their
gods did not strike him down, the people were amazed
and converted. The baptismal shell is a reminder of the
thousands he personally baptized. Attacked by barbari-
ans on one of his missions, the saint tried to protect his
head with his book of gospels. The book and his head
were split by a blow of the sword.
