Business Baazigar Showcase your Business Acumen

Smiling Soul Ventures operate into multiple domains including

consultancy, education services, training and trading of chemicals
and dry-fruits. The present case-study pertains to the dry-fruit
segment of their business.
With the festive season coming near, especially Diwali, the dry-fruit
trading segment of Smiling Soul Ventures was into full swing. The
last 3 years hadnt been the best as they were not able to generate
enough sales. Rihaan, the charismatic Chairman heading the dry-
fruit division was a bit worried. The margins were shrinking and the
sales were not picking up. He had received an ultimatum from the
group head that if the business didnt generate profit this year, the
group would shut-down the division. Rihaan was in love with the dry-
fruit business and did not want it to slip away.
About the Dry Fruity Business
SSV Dry Fruits procures the worlds finest dry-fruits from across the
globe, sorts and packages it and supplies to retail and corporate
clients in India. Their main products were:
Almonds 2 varieties Standard and Premium
Pistachios 2 varieties Cholesterol-free (with shell) and without
shell
Raisins Standard and Premium
Cashews Plain Standard, Premium and Exotic
Salted - Standard
The philosophy was to offer the worlds finest dry-fruits at reasonable
prices to the common man of the country. Though the philosophy was
noble, there was plenty of competition in the market which made it
difficult to achieve sales growth. In their bid to boost sales, SSV also
went online and standard selling their products through sites like e-
bay, rediff shopping etc. But the margins were eroded due to
dependence on third party services. Subsequently, they started their
E-commerce website but the cost of the site far exceeded the benefits.
Sales didnt pick up. Rihaan was worried how to reach the masses
and convince them to purchase what he had to offer.
Major Concerns
1. The value proposition offered by SSV Dry Fruits is not unique
2. No pre-defined channel for retail and corporate clients
3. Inability of achieve sales
