Shortcut to find cuberoot of any 5 or 6 digit number

Shortcut to find cube root is especially helpful in competitive

exams where every second counts.
By using this method you can save a lot of time and also get
accurate results.
Shortcut to mentally find the cube root of any 5 or 6 digit
number
Step 1:Find the cube root of the last digit.
Points to be remembered while using this method.
(1)If the last digit is 8 then cube root will be 2.
(2)If the last digit is 2 then cube root will be 8.
(3)If the last digit is 7 then cube root will be 3.
(4)If the last digit is 3 then cube root will be 7.
(5)If the last digit is any other digit other than 2,8,3,7 then put
the same number.
From this step you will get the unit's or one's place digit.
To find the tenth place digit you need to follow the below steps.
Step 2:Strike out the last 3 digits of the given number.
Step 3: find the nearest cube of the remaining number.
Step 4: find the cube root of the nearest cube which will give
you ten's place digit.
List of cubes to be memorized
13=1
43=64
73=343
23=8
53=125
83=512
33=27
63=216
93=729

NOTE: Shortcut to find cuberoot of any 5 or 6 digit number is

applicable only if the given number is a perfect cube.
You can verify whether the given number is a perfect cube or
not by using the Prime Factorization Method. If you are not
familiar with this method check it here.
Let me explain this with an example to make things more clear
and easy to understand.
So lets say we want to find the cube root of a 6 digit number
15746
Example 1:Find the cube root of 157464 in 5 seconds.
157464=?
Step 1:First we need to find the cube root of the last digit
of the given number.
Here the last digit is 4 . 4 is a number other than 2,
8, 3, 7
hence we put the number as it is.
We get our one's place digit as 4.
Now to get tenth place digit
Step 2: We need to strike the last 3 digits of the given
number.
In this example the last 3 digits are 464 which we
will strike off as shown below
157464

Step 3:We need to find the nearest cube to the remaining

number(157)
We find that 125 is the nearest cube to 157.
Step 4: We need to find the cube root of the nearest
cube(125)
125=5
From this step we get our ten's place digit as 5.
From step 1 and step 4 we get the
157464=54
Ans:54

Now, that you have understood how to find cube root of a

number within seconds
lets see how this method works for a 5 digit number with the
help of an example
Example 2:Find the cube root of 32768
32768=?
Step 1: First,we need to find the cube root of the last
digit of the given number.
Here the last digit is 8.
8=2
We get the one's place digit as 2.

Step 2: We need to strike out the last 3 digits of the

given number.
In this example,768 are the last 3 digits which
we we will strike off as shown below
32768
Step 3: We find that the nearest cube to the remaining
number(32) is 27.
Step 4: Now, we find that the cube root of 27
That will be 27=3
From this step we get the ten's place digit as 3.
Hence, from step 1 and step 2 we get
32768=32
Ans:32
Shortcut to find squareroot of any number

n every bank exam you are asked either to find the square root
or cube root of a number. By knowing the shortcut to find the
square root of a number, you will be able to find out the square
root of any number within seconds.
Now lets go through the steps...
Step 1: First of all group the number in pairs of 2 starting from
the right.

Step 2: To get the tens place digit, Find the nearest square
(equivalent or greater than or less than) to the first grouped pair
from left and put the square root of the square.
Step 3: To get the units place digit of the square root
Remember the following
If number Units place digit of the
ends in
square root
1
1 or 9(10-1)
4
2 or 8(10-2)
9
3 or 7(10-3)
6
4or 6(10-4)
5
5
0
0
Lets see the logic behind this for a better understanding
We know,
12=1
22=4
32=9
42=16
52=25
62=36
72=49
82=64
92=81
102=100
Now, observe the units place digit of all the squares.
Do you find anything common?

We notice that,
Units place digit of both 12 and 9 is 1.
Units place digit of both 22 and 82 is 4
Units place digit of both 32 and 72 is 9
Units place digit of both 42 and 62 is 6.
2

Step 4: Multiply the tens place digit (found in step 1) with its
consecutive number and compare the result obtained with the
first pair of the original number from left.
Remember,
If first pair of the original number > Result obtained on
multiplication then select the greater number out of the two
numbers as the units place digit of the square root.
If firstpair of the original number < the result obtained on
multiplication,then select the lesser number out of the two
numbers as the units place digit of the square root.
Let us consider an example to get a better understanding of the
method
Example 1: 784=?
Step 1: We start by grouping the numbers in pairs of two from
right as follows
7 84
Step 2: To get the tens place digit,
We find that nearest square to first group (7) is 4 and 4=2
Therefore tens place digit=2
Step 3: To get the units place digit,

We notice that the number ends with 4, So the units place digit
of the square root should be either 2 or 8(Refer table).
Step 4: Multiplying the tens place digit of the square root that
we arrived at in step 1(2) and its consecutive number(3) we get,
2x3=6
tens place digit of original number > Multiplication result
7>6
So we need to select the greater number (8) as the units place
digit of the square root.
Unit's place digit =8
Ans:784=28
SHORTCUT TO FIND CUBE OF ANY NUMBER FROM 1 TO 100
Step 1: Assume the ten's place number of the given number as a and the unit's
place number as b.
Step 2: Now, we all know that (a+b)3=a3 + 3a2b + 3ab2 + b3
We shall manipulate the same formula to calculate the cube of a number.

(i)Find b3 to get the last digit

If you get two digit number then, add ten's place digit to 3ab2
(ii) Find 3ab2
If you get two digit number then, keep the unit's place digit and and
add ten's place digit to 3a2b.
(iii) Find 3a2b
If you get two digit number then, keep the unit's place digit and and
add ten's place digit to a3.

(iv) Find a3
If you get two digit number then, just add the carried forward digit if any
and write the number.
Cube of any 2 digit number will be in the pattern of
a3 3a2b 3ab2 b3
Cube To make things easier it is good to memorize the cubes of numbers from 1
to 10
13=1
23=8
33=27
43=64
53=125
63=216
73=343
83=512
93=729

Lets use this method to calculate the cube of a number with help of an
example to understand better
Example 1: (32)3=?
Step 1: Assume a= 3 and b= 2
Step 2: Now substituting the values of a and b in the below pattern
a3 3a2b 3ab2 b3
(i) Finding b3 Now that is
b3=23=8
We get the last digit as 8.
(ii) Finding 3ab2
3ab2=3(3)(2)2=36
From this we will keep the one's place digit(6) and add the ten's place digit(3) to 3ab.

(iii)Finding 3ab and adding ten's place digit(3)

3a2b=3(3)2(2)=3(9)(2)=54 + 3= 57

From this we will keep the one's place digit(7) and add ten's place digit(5) to b in the next

(iv)

step.

Finding a3 and adding the ten's place digit(5) from previous step

a3=33=27+5=32
From this we get the number as 32

From all the above steps we get

(32)3=32768

Example 2:(47)3=?
Step 1: Assume a= 4 and b= 7
Step 2: Now substituting the values of a and b in the below pattern
a3 3a2b 3ab2 b3
(i) Finding b3 Now that is
b3=73=343
We get the last digit as 3.
(ii) Finding 3ab2
3ab2=3(4)(7)2=12 x 49=588 (Tip: Use Shortcut to multiply any 2 digit by 2 digit)
Now add 34 that you got from step 1 to 588,we get 588+34=622
From this we will keep the one's place digit(2) and add remaining digits(62) to 3ab2.

(iii)Finding 3a2b and adding remaining digits of step 2(62)

3a2b=3(4)2(7)=16 x 21=336
336+ 62=398
From this we will keep the one's place digit(8) and add remaining digits(39) to a3.

(iv)

Finding a3 and adding the remaining digits from step 3

a3=43=64
64 + 39=103

From all the above steps we get

473=103823

Shortcut to subtract any 5 or 6 digit number in seconds

Subtraction is the opposite of addition

Suppose we have to subtract two numbers such as 15-2=13
Then,In this subtraction the first number 15 is called the
minuend meaning to be made less and the number 2 is the
subtrahend meaning that which is to be subtracted and the
number 13 is the difference.
Minuend-subtrahend=difference
When Minuend is larger than the subtrahend, there is no
problem in subtracting.
Example:Minuend is 162 and the subtrahend is 51 and we are
required to subtract the numbers.
162
- 5 1
--------14 1
--------We can easily get the difference whether we do it from right or
left.
But what if we had to subtract 45 from 64
if we start using the method of borrowing that we are so used to
from our school days no doubt we will arrive at the difference
but it is not that easy.
There is a simple trick that you can use here to get the
difference easily and within seconds.

Trick
Lets discuss the steps now
Step 1: Subtract the numbers of the subtrahend from the
Minuend
Step 2: If any digit in subtrahend is more than Minuend then
add a circle on difference you get on subtracting.
Step 3:Now wherever circle is there it means the complement of
the number(10- number)
Step 4:If there is any digit before the circled number then 1
must be subtracted from the number.
We shall now consider some examples to understand better
Example 1:47-28=?
Observe that the Minuend is 47 and Subtrahend is 28 where the
unit's place digit is more than the minuend's units digit.
First we subtract as usual
4 7
-2 8
--------21
---------Note that 8 is more than 7 so we add a circle on 1
We find Complement of the difference(1)=10-1=9
Subtract 1 from previous number(2) as the next digit is circled
We get
47
-2 8

--------21
1 9

Ans 47-28=19
Example 2:37-29=?
Minuend is 37 and Subtrahend is 29
First we subtract as usual
33
-2 9
--------16
Note that the unit's place digit(9) of subtrahend is more than the
unit's place digit(3) of minuend so we add a circle on the
difference
We find Complement of the difference(6)=10-6=4
Subtract 1 from previous number(1) as the next digit is circled
We get,
33
-2 9
--------16
04

Ans 37-29=4
Example 3:65381-42497=?
First we subtract as usual
65381
-4 2 4 9 7
--------------23116
Add circle on the digits 6,1,1 as these digits of the subtrahend
are more than their corresponding digits in minuend
We get,
6 5 3 8 1
-4 2 4 9 7
--------------------2 3 1 1 6
--------------------Now we find complements of the circled numbers
Complement of 6=10-6=4
Complement of 1=10-1=9
Complement of 1=10-1=9
We get,
6 5 3 8 1
-4 2 4 9 7
------------------2 39 9 4
-------------------

Subtracting 1 from the numbers previous to the circled numbers

We get,
6 5 3 8 1
-4 2 4 9 7
-----------------2 2 8 8 4
------------------Ans 65381-42497=22884
