The film is based on actual events where the Globe's reporting on the scandal earned it the 2003 Pulitzer Prize for Public Service. Spotlight received widespread critical acclaim for its direction, screenplay, acting, and handling of the sensitive subject matter, and went on to win Academy Awards for Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay.

In2001,TheBostonGlobehiresaneweditor,MartyBaron.BaronmeetsWalter"Robby"Robinson,the
editoroftheSpotlightteam,asmallgroupofjournalistswritinginvestigativearticlesthattakemonthsto
researchandpublish.AfterBaronreadsaGlobecolumnaboutalawyer,MitchellGarabedian,whosays
thatCardinalLaw(theArchbishopofBoston)knewthatthepriestJohnGeoghanwassexuallyabusing
childrenanddidnothingtostophim,heurgestheSpotlightteamtoinvestigate.JournalistMichael
RezendescontactsGarabedian,whoinitiallydeclinesinterview.Thoughheistoldnotto,Rezendesreveals
thatheisontheSpotlightteam,persuadingGarabediantotalk.
Initiallybelievingthattheyarefollowingthestoryofonepriestwhowasmovedaroundseveraltimes,the
SpotlightteambegintouncoverapatternofsexualabuseofchildrenbyCatholicpriestsinMassachusetts,
andanongoingcoverupbytheBostonArchdiocese.Throughamanwhoheadsavictim'srights

Astheyareabouttogotoprint,Robinsonconfessestotheteamthathewassentalistoftwentypedophile
priestsin1993inastoryheneverfollowedupon.Baron,nevertheless,tellsRobinsonandtheteamthatthe
