Purpose of the Position:
Lead the design of innovative new product development projects and improvements to existing products in
collaboration with Engineering, Global Product Management, Marketing, Manufacturing, Sourcing, Supply
Chain/Logistics, and Finance colleagues.
Key Responsibilities:
In conjunction with Product Management, define product requirements and specifications, associated
project deliverables, risk assessments, and project schedules necessary to support program
requirements and corporate business goals.
Lead ideation via team brain-storming, competitive analysis, mining of manufacturing and customer
care data, and participation in customer focus groups.
Lead development of new products from conception through design, analysis, test/validation,
production, and field service that leverage technical rigor and meet customer requirements.
Author product specifications in response to program requirements.
Accurately estimate time to complete deliverables and tasks. Maintain commitments to project
schedules, creating and maintaining Gantt charts in concert with Project Engineering to ensure smooth
and consistent project coordination and timeliness.
Independently and within a team design cost effective, manufacturable parts and assemblies that
support program specifications.
Provide direction to cross-functional team personnel including Designers, Drafters, Laboratory and
Test Technicians, and staff within partner design consulting and engineering firms, remote Engineering
Centers and Manufacturing sites.
Supervise and construct bench test feasibility models, prototypes, and Pre-Production units.
Consistently apply governing Global Engineering design standards, tools and systems to project work
while pursuing goals and objectives.
Insure the technical accuracy and soundness of an intended design solution including appropriate
material selection, tolerance analysis/calculations, simulations, and testing as defined and
implemented to meet project goals.
Work with Manufacturing Engineering and/or Supplier Quality Engineering/Sourcing to incorporate
LEAN manufacturing and DFM/DFMA principals into design concepts.
Work in conjunction with colleagues responsible for tooling, equipment and manufacturing technology
to execute an achievable manufacturing build plan.
Work with Suppliers to select materials and components and where needed, develop specifications
thereof.
Manage product validation, including preparing, reviewing, and presenting test reports consistent with
all government and internal safety and quality standards.
Evaluate and value engineer current designs and associated manufacturing and sourcing processes
for cost reduction and quality improvement.
Identify opportunities for continuous improvement of the engineering/new product development
process coincident with project execution (speed, discipline, quality outcome), and work with
colleagues to embed changes in Standard Work, templates, etc. to sustain the change.
Work with Manufacturing to resolve production problems, including material issues, outsourcing and
component approval.
Lead the evaluation of products for compliance to codes and mitigation of safety hazards.
Prepare and manage Engineering Release and Change Notices with affected constituents.
Participate in the creation and evaluation of intellectual property and patents.
Support development, evaluation, revision, and/or refinement of design techniques, CAD and analysis
tools, and department standards for Global Engineering deployment.

Werner UK
Experience & Education:
BSME or equivalent required; MSME preferred.
Minimum of eight years of new and sustaining product development design and independent project
management, with significant hands on expertise.
Experience with metal and plastic materials, structural analysis, extrusion, fabrication and joining for
high volume production.
Expertise in contemporary design and modeling/analysis tools; SolidWorks preferred.
Key Competencies:
Ability to demonstrate leadership, organization, and execution skills with a high degree of independent
judgment in a fast paced environment.
Ability to focus on personal accountability and motivate team accountability, demonstrating attributes of
team playing to balance project, local and Global Engineering and overall business goals and
objectives.
Ability to seek out solutions across functional departments and remote sites.
Adaptability and multi-tasking, comfortable in an environment requiring decisiveness and staying the
course, yet being flexible within shifting priorities.
Ability to comply with procedural requirements and understand and apply specifications, where
needed, with an eye for simultaneous process improvement.
Must possess broad communication skills and the ability to take direction and coordinate projects
remotely (off-site) from direct Supervisor.
Design knowledge in multiple manufacturing processes including sheet metal, extrusions, finishing
operations, joining, welding, machining, fixtures, and injection molded plastic.
Special Requirements:
Travel to domestic and international engineering centers, manufacturing sites, and suppliers.
