Barullo de cartas: 1.
Mozart 1770

Milan, January 26th 1770
Dear Sister:
It makes me really happy and I mean it to know that that excursion in sledge had delighted you so
much and I wish you a thousand more chances of delight in order that your life really passes away
happily. But one thing bothers me, and is that you must not allow S:v: Mölk to sigh and suffer so
endlessly, and that you had not gone with him to ride on sled so he could had make you roll over:
how many handkerchiefs he would had needed to cry because of you in that sole day; without doubt
he would have swallowed 2 loth [1] of tartar, that would have made him to expell all that horrible filth
inside of that body of his. Again I only know that S: gelehert, the poet from leigzig, is dead and since
his death he had not written any poetry. Exactly before I began to write this letter I finished an aria
from the Demetrio that begins like this:
Misero Tu non sei:
Tu spieghi il Tuo Dolore;
e se non desti amore;
Ritrovi almen pietà.
Misera ben sono io
Che nel segretto laccio
Amo, non spero e taccio
E l’idol mio nol sà[2].
The opera from Montua was pretty, they played the Demetrio, the prima Dona sings fine but low,
and if one watched her only singing and not acting, one would think that she cannot sing because
she never opens her mouth, but she just whines everything out, something that, after all, is not new
for us to hear. The seconda Dona has the look of a grenadier and also a powerful voice, and she
really does not sing bad to be her first time on stage. the primo uomo il musico sings fine but his
voice is inharmonious, his name is Casselli. the Secondo uomo is now old, and I do not like him, his
name is... Tenor[3]. One is called otini, and he does not sings bad, but the truth is that, fleshy as all
italian tenors are, and he is a very good friend of us, the other one I do not know his name, he is yet
young, but nothing too impressive, primo ballerino. prima Ballerina: good, and they say that she is in
anything like a dog, but of course I had not seen her from quite near, the others are just like
everybody else: There was a Crudescer [4]that jumps well but he cannot write like I do: how the
hogs piss is.
The Orcchestro was not bad. In Cremona the Orcchestro good, and the first violinist is called
Spangnoletto, prima Donna not bad, now old I believe, like a dog, she does not sing as well as she
acts, and she is the woman of a violinist that plays the violin in the opera, and her name is Masi. the
opera is called: La clemenza di Tito. seconda Donna, in the theater no real dog, young, but in the
least impressive. primo uomo Musico cichognani, a beautiful voice and a cute Cantable. The other
two castrated, young and bearable. Tenor: his name is: non lo sò. for himself a very agreeable
presence: he looks like Le Roi: from Vienna. which had come to leman, naturally at once: Ballerino
primo, good, Ballerina prima, good, and a very tall dog. there was a Dancer that did not dance bad
and, although she is not a Capod opera off stage, in theater she is no dog. everyone else is
everyone else. A Crudescer was there too who with each jump let come through a second one.
from Milan I cannot really write you much, we had not been yet to the opera, we have heard that
there are not any gradins at the opera. Aprile primo uomo sings fine, he has a very beautiful
unequal voice, we have heard him in church where a big party was being hosted: Madam piccienelli
from paris, who sung in our concert, is part of the opera: Monsieur Bicch, who danced in vienna,
dances here in Milan too. The opera is called: Cesare in eccito: here we have the feste di Ballo too:
as soon as the opera is over, the fest di ballo begins: the housekeeper of Conte di Firminan is
Viennese, and last Friday we ate there, and next Sunday we will too. farewell and kiss mamma’s
hands a Thousand times in vece mia, that I am until my death your faithful brother.

[1] Measure of weight, equivalent to 16 2/3 grams.
[2] You are not unfortunate: / You explain your pain; / And if you not gave love; / At least mercy you
find. / Rather I am the unfortunate / who in secret deceive / love, despair and keep silent / And my
love doesn’t know it.
[3] There’s a space for about four letters in the original.
[4] “Grottesco” dancer.
