From when I was ten, I had always watched and helped my father who is a car mechanic in
his workshop after school hours. He once showed me how I could fix my damaged toy car.
Since then I have tried to repair various toy cars and appliances at home. All these had spurred
my interest to study mechanical engineering at undergraduate level.
The diversity and scope present in mechanical engineering is in line with my enthusiasm for
maths and science. Courses that were of special interest to me were mathematics, physics and
science in my high school days, in my university days ; mechanical engineering design, Fluid
mechanics, Turbomachinery, Electrical Machines, Instrumentation, Numerical analysis,
Probability and Statistics, Automotive systems and vehicle dynamics, etc. I have also
demonstrated academic excellence in high school and my undergraduate days due to my
interest in these subjects and I subsequently was awarded three (3) full scholarships in my
undergraduate days and 1 full scholarship in my high school days. I graduated among the top
15 of my undergraduate class with a CGPA of 70.8%( 2nd Class Upper Division) in May,
2015.
My inquisitive nature has led me to understand the principles and operations of machines no
matter how complex. I believe this attitude will help me face the challenges of modern
engineering. I have a strong drive to succeed and Loughborough University will enable me
stretch my boundaries. I strive to sharpen and improve my ability to solve physical and
mathematical problems; establish a rigid understanding of basic principles. I have a genuine
zeal to excel which makes me competitive, strong, analytical, innovative and logical to solve
problems.
The mechanical engineering industry has been at the forefront of new and cutting edge
technologies especially in compressors, pumps, turbines, centrifuges, gearboxes, flywheel,
spindles, wood stock, shaft ends, planes, engines, automobiles, ships, etc pushing the
boundaries of technological advancement at an exponential rate. I had developed a keen
interest in automobile systems from my final year in school after taking
courses on vehicle dynamics and Automobile engineering. This was
boosted when I did a 2 months volunteer service at a Toyota Subsidiary in
Rivers state, Nigeria. I have also when I interned in Weatherford Nigeria
Limited for 6 months and as an Assistant Mechanical Engineer in Citec
Integrated Building Products limited, Jabi, Abuja, Nigeria for 12 months; I
assisted in the maintenance of Machineries such as pumps, compressors,
fork lifts, car parts, agitators, flush mounted spiders, power tongs,
generators, etc. It was a great opportunity to gain insight into how
machines work. These experiences kindled my eagerness to learn more
about Automobiles. My undergraduate studies gave me a substantial
knowledge on the basics of machine design as i designed and fabricated a
vegetable slicing machine with an efficiency of 78% in 2014 using
AutoCAD and Excel tools. I taught myself AutoCAD and Excel due to my
innate technical ability. This project helped me develop my intuition and
analytical skills.
This urge to obtain profound understanding and specialized knowledge in
my areas of interest, has made me opt for M.Sc. in Automotive Systems
Engineering at Loughborough University. The core courses of this
programme is in line with my interests, making it an ideal choice for me.
Loughborough University is known for its practical approach and industry
interface. Their teaching team are active researchers as well as tutors and
have extensive experience of rotating equipment in both industrial and
research and development environments. The Computer Aided Design
(CAD) tools and techniques available to their students will enable me fit
into the rapidly changing technologies in the engineering industry. I am
particularly interested in the areas of Vehicle Dynamics and Aerodynamics,
and Engine Power Train Technologies. Nigerias automobile industry would
provide me huge opportunities to carve my career.
I have participated in many extracurricular activities in secondary school and undergraduate
days. I led my school Jets club to various Inter-School Quiz competitions and won Gold and
silver medals in if 2005 and 2006 respectively, I had volunteered as a Recruiter in AIESEC
(Association Internationale des tudiants en Sciences conomiques et Commerciales) from
May 2012 to November 2014 where I helped recruit over 200 undergraduate interns. I have
also held several executive positions in many associations like Association of Mechanical
Engineering Students, as Secretary General in 2013, Public Relations Officer in 2012, I had
volunteered for a community development service in Environmental and protection and
Sanitation for 11 months (November 2016 to October 2016). My task was to create healthy
and clean environment awareness communities. Constant engagement with these communities
had developed my communication and team work skills. My participation in these activities
show my strength in being a leader and well organized.
Living in different states of Nigeria gives me the ability to adapt to any situation. Besides my
academics, I will be going for a MINI-MBA with Junior Venture Achievement Nigeria of
Lagos Business School, Nigeria by February 2016. I hope to develop negotiation and
presentation skills as this will help me in the management of large engineering projects, and
overall performance of any team I work with.
I look forward to obtaining an engineering license when I return to Nigeria, attaining a
professional level with relevant industry experience which will enhance my goals and career
development. Later, I will further my studies in the areas of Power Train and
alternative fuels at the doctorate level, this will enable me become a
proper researcher. When I finish PhD, I hope to become the head of
Research and development for any automobile organization in Nigeria over
the next 10 years.
I sincerely hope that my application will be considered by your graduate admissions
committee so that I will be able to contribute my talents and efforts to the development of new
technologies in the engineering field.
Thanks
