For at least 3 out of the 5 categories below, provide a description (at least 3-5 sentences) including the month, the repertoire, and the connections
you will provide to the curriculum.
Science:
Social studies:
I believe that in general, sections where the class learns about world culture’s will satisfy social studies connections. These take place in the
Months of September, October, December/January, February, April, and May. Additionally, our class will cover American folk music in August
and March. During this time, we will discuss what life was like for individuals who sang these songs. This section will satisfy Olathe’s social
study unit of American settlers on the Oregon and Santa Fe Trails.
Language Arts (Reading, Writing, Speaking, Research):
In November, our class is doing a unit on jazz. To pair with this lesson, we will be doing an activity from the book This Jazz Man. While
following along with the book, the class will be reading the text and speaking it out loud. This satisfies the Olathe School District’s standard
RF.4.4. a) “Read on-level text with purpose and understanding.”
Health/P.E.:
This connection takes place in March during our unit on American Folk Dances. The dance to Alabama Gal requires students to do a decent
amount of moving as they move from the front of the line and through the tunnel. Relating to curriculum, this activity fits in Standard 4 of the
Olathe School District: “Participates in moderate to vigorous levels of physical activity that develop each component of physical fitness.”
