Kahivhen Q. Casinillo Book of Mormon, Religion 122 Independent Study

Moroni wrote "a few more things" in Moroni 1-7 to provide teachings that could be "of worth" to others. He lists seven truths, including that the Book of Mormon was written for the Lamanites and future generations. Moroni survived for 37 years after the final Nephite battle, keeping his faith by preserving records and feeling sympathy for others. He taught about the importance of ordinances like baptism, which provide what nothing else can by offering priesthood blessings and sealings. Moroni's description of the Nephite Church and ordinances is similar to today's, including conferring the Holy Ghost, ordaining priests, and administering the sacrament. The Light of Christ

Lesson 13
Moroni 1 - 7

Complete assignment 6 and any three of the remaining assignments:

1. Moroni 1–7. “I Write a Few More Things”

Moroni stated that he was writing “a few more things, that perhaps they may be of worth unto my brethren” (Moroni
1:4). Read through the chapter headings for Moroni 1–7. As you do so, make a list of at least seven truths or teachings
that you feel are “of worth” unto the world.

1. The Book of Mormon is written for the benefit of the Lamanites and the future generations.

2. Jesus Christ calls his servants or disciples and gave them power and authority to confer the gift the Holy Ghost
and other ordinances essential to salvation.

3. Priesthood positions are organized and ordained by laying on of hands as commanded by God.

4. Sacramental Ordinance is performed and administered only by elders and priests according to the revelation
given by God. The mode of Sacrament must be followed in unison with the given revelation by God only.

5. The Spirit of Christ enables men to know Good from Evil and Satan persuades men to deny Christ and do evil.

6. Repentant persons are baptized, fellowshipped, and forgiven. Men should hope for eternal life.

7. Miracles and ministration of angels are manifested by Faith and Charity.

2. Moroni 1. “I, Moroni, Will Not Deny the Christ”

Make note of how long Moroni survived after the final battle recorded in the Book of Mormon. Refer to Mormon 6:5
and compare that date to Moroni 10:1. Read Moroni 1 and write your answers to the following questions:

Moroni has survived from 384 A.D up to 421 A.D. Therefore he lived almost 37 years after the final battle at
Cumorah.

• What does this chapter tell us of Moroni’s life during this period of time?

This chapter tells us that Moroni’s life is a struggle of survival because the robbers and Lamanites keep hunting
and the Nephites.

• How do you think Moroni kept his faith throughout this trying time?

Moroni kept his faith throughout this trying time by preserving the Nephite record and feeling a deep sympathy
for the welfare of his enemies, the Lamanites.

• How can you develop such a firm testimony of Jesus Christ?

I can develop a firm testimony of Jesus Christ as I stay in the narrow path, or the covenant path and avoid the
temptations and allurement of the adversary. Also to guard myself by searching the scriptures and thinking of the
eternal welfare of my brethren as what Moroni has also done when he is alone.

3. Moroni 2–6. The Priesthood and Sacred Ordinances

a. Read the institute student manual commentary “Moroni 2–5: The Importance of Ordinances in the Church of Jesus
Christ (pages 382–83). Study Moroni 2–6; Doctrine and Covenants 20:37–39, 46–60, 68–79. Respond in writing to the
following questions:

• Why is it important to receive the ordinances of the gospel?

Receiving the ordinances of the gospel is important because without it, it is impossible to enter back to Heavenly
Father’s presence. They are like heavenly keys to the celestial doors of salvation and exaltation. Even we are righteous in
words and works, if we have not performed the necessary ordinances and covenants, we cannot be redeemed.

• What do ordinances provide that nothing else can?

Ordinances provides us with Priesthood blessings and sealings. For example, when we are baptized, we are
promised the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost. As we partake of the sacrament ordinance, we are promised to
have the Holy Ghost to be with us also. When we do temple ordinances, the Holy Ghost seals the performance and
families relationships can be secured beyond the grave. When we obey the higher law and keep our temple covenants,
these will provide us with eternal blessings and exaltations.

b. Make a list of at least five similarities between Moroni’s description of the Nephite Church and its ordinances and
today’s Church and its ordinances.

1. Conferring of the Holy Ghost after baptism.

2. Elders ordaining priests by laying on of hands.
3. The administration of the sacrament by elders and priests.
4. The covenant of Baptism to take upon the name of Christ, serve and keep the Savior’s commandments and
endure until the end.
5. That church membes to meet together often and to fast and pray for each other’s welfare.

6. Moroni 7:12–33. “Lay Hold upon Every Good Thing”

a. Read Moroni 7:12–19 and the student manual commentary “Moroni 7:12–19: The Light of Christ” (pages 389–90).
Write responses to the following:

• Identify who the Light of Christ is given to.

The light of Christ is given to every man, meaning it is for all men on Earth whether members of Christ’s church
or not, Israelites or Gentiles, Jew or Nephite and all men and momen created by God.

• What is the Light of Christ?

The Light of Christ is related to our conscience which helps us discern what is good from evil.

• List at least five functions of the Light of Christ.

1. To know good from evil and discern it.
2. Persuades men to believe in Christ and to repent.
3. Invites to do good.
4. To judge righteously and not wrongfully.
5. It gives light to all things and be enlightened with greater understanding.

b. Explain in one or two sentences why the Light of Christ is so important to all mankind.
The Light of Christ is very important to all of us because it can be compared to a gauge. A gauge is an instrument
which measures exactly the amount or information of something. In our life, Light of Christ will assess us and notify us if
our actions or decisions are within the standards the Lord has set or beyond what is worthy or wholesome. It gives us a
feeling of rightness or wrongness according to our behavior. When we do something wrong, we express a feeling of
remorse or guilt and that’s the Light of Christ telling gauging our acts that it is contrary to God’s law or standards.

c. Read through Moroni 7:19–21 and note how often the phrase “lay hold upon every good thing” is repeated. Write
what you think the phrase “lay hold upon” means.

The “Lay hold upon” phrase was used three times every verse in Moroni 7:19-21. Lay hold upon may also be
meant to grasp and to be secured upon it. In the words of Moroni, as we lay hold or remain with firmness and conviction
into the Savior’s gospel and foundation, we will be able to follow the Light of Christ. As we diligently seek Him, we will be
called a child of Christ and be his follower.

d. From Moroni 7:22–33, record at least two means that the Lord has given to help us “lay hold upon every good
thing.”

1. He sent angels to minister and manifest concerning the coming of Christ.

2. He declared His coming unto His prophets by His own mouth.

e. Write a paragraph explaining how modern prophets have helped you to “lay hold upon” something good.

The modern prophets have helped us to lay hold upon something good specially when I search their words from
conferences or listen to them live via broadcasts. I feel their sincerity and love and makes me feel excited to do more
good and to follow the Savior. It helps me to be patient with my trials and entirely trust in the Lord’s helping hand and
protection. They exemplify acts of true discipleship and sacrifice to others and motivates me to also serve my neighbors,
and forgive all men. They invite me do remember my covenants in the temple and baptism and how I can endure to the
end. These prophets speak like the Savior and always tells me to change my weaknesses and to remain humble and
teachable.
