Observe Precautionary/ Safety Measures in Using Mixtures of Solid and Liquid

This document provides instructions for an activity to describe what happens when solid materials are mixed with liquid materials. Students will be divided into groups and each group will observe the effects of mixing different solids and liquids at their station. Examples given are mixing sand with water, flour with vinegar, salt with oil, and other combinations. Students will then present their observations of which solids dissolved completely, partially dissolved, or did not dissolve at all in the different liquids. The next activity will involve students observing and comparing the effects of mixing various solids and liquids in pairs, like soy sauce and vinegar or oil and water.

Describe what happens to the solid materials when mixed with the liquid materials
II. Changes in the Properties of the Materials When
Mixed with other materials
Curriculum Guide, Science Learner’s Material, Science Teacher’s Guide
S4MT-Ig-h-6
A. Materials:
1pc. teaspoon 4pcs. clear drinking glass
Tap water vinegar
Cooking oil rubbing alcohol

prepare coffee?
B. Exploration:
1. Group the pupils into four.

5. Remind each group that they will be presenting their outputs in class after conducting the
activity.
C. Explanation:
1. Ask the pupils to present their data in class and the answers to the guide questions
* What are the solid materials that can be completely dissolved in the liquid materials?
* What are the solid materials that can not be completely dissolved in the liquid materials?
D. Elaboration
* Solid materials can be mixed/combined with
liquid materials. Some solid materials
completely dissolved in the liquid materials,
but others do not. Some solid materials settled
at the bottom of the container, while others
stayed within the liquid. Some solid materials,
spread out evenly in the liquid materials, but
some do not. When mixed with liquid, some
solid materials changed their size, shape, and
color, but some do not.
