Albert Einstein and consciousness

"A human being is a part of a whole, called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. He
experiences himself, his thoughts and feelings as something separated from the rest... a kind of
optical delusion of his consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our
personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free
ourselves from this prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures
and the whole of nature in its beauty."

- Albert Einstein

Spirituality and consciousness

“In many religious traditions God is seen as infinite, all powerful, perfect and beyond change and
growth. In stark contrast the universe is evolving an ever expanding consciousness often through
excruciatingly painful struggles. Our mathematical and scientific understanding suggests God is
an unfolding creative process that may expand without limit. In that framework we are the eyes
of God with the power to create the world. We are the evolution of consciousness becoming
aware of itself and beginning to acquire the power to take conscious control of evolution.”
Paul P. Budnik Jr.

Levels of Consciousness
From the conscious awareness of an infant to its immediate environment,
recognizing its mother as apart from others, for instance, levels of consciousness
rise as we grow.

Colin Wilson suggests at least eight degrees of consciousness, from Level 0 to 7.

They are: Level 0—deep sleep; Level 1—dreaming or hypnagogic; Level 2—mere
awareness or unresponsive waking state; Level 3—self awareness that is dull and
meaningless; Level 4—passive and reactive, normal consciousness that regards
life 'as a grim battle'; Level 5—an active, spontaneous, happy consciousness in
which life is exciting and interesting; Level 6—a transcendent level where time
ceases to exist. Wilson does take note of further levels of consciousness as
experienced by mystics but gives no details.

Cosmic Consciousness
Canadian psychologist Richard M. Bucke, in his book Cosmic Consciousness,
coined this term. It is a transpersonal mode of consciousness, an awareness of
the universal mind and one's unity with it. Its prime characteristic is a
consciousness of the life and order in the universe. An individual who at attains
this state is often described as 'Enlightened' and such a person is also said to
have a sense of immortality, not of attaining it but of already having it. Burke
saw this state of consciousness as the next stage in human evolution, very much
as spiritualists have always seen it.

Indian yogis and mystics classify the seven states of consciousness differently.
They point out that human beings normally experience only three states:
sleeping, dreaming and waking. In meditation, fleetingly you experience turya,
literally the fourth state, or transcendental consciousness, commonly known as
samadhi. When this state coexists and stabilizes with the other three, that is the
fifth state, where I-consciousness expands to become cosmic consciousness. The
sixth state is God consciousness whereby you see God everywhere, in everything.
The last is unity consciousness: what is within is also outside—pure
consciousness, and nothing else is.

Consciousness 06/12/10 1:51 AM

Spiritually, consciousness is as vast as the universe, both known and unknown.

The potential power of this level of consciousness has been merely touched upon
and that too by a few mystics. Consciousness at this level becomes capable of
magical powers, defying accepted scientific physical laws and giving us a glimpse
of probable future developments in, among other things, quantum physics.

Collective Consciousness
Historically, great movements in any area emerge from a collective consciousness.
It is not surprising that in any given field of activity, great ideas do not occur in
isolation. Despite an idea germinating in an individual mind, it is interesting to
note that the same idea strikes two or more thinkers, geographically far apart,
around the same time. Collective consciousness results from consensus. At any
given time, collective consciousness is actively operational in a group as small as
the family and as large as half the global population. The power of collective
consciousness has not been fully explored or appreciated, except perhaps in times
of great distress when 'prayers' are offered by a group of individuals for a
particular reason and the prayers are answered.

The Paradox of Consciousness

Kierkegaard says: "The supreme paradox of all thought is the attempt to discover something that
thought cannot think." A conscious human knows something and he knows that he knows it (ad
infinitum). The paradox of consciousness is not that we are aware of ourselves but of other
things as well, including those that do not constitute the 'real world'. Of course, when we
'conceive' or imagine something 'unreal' even our farthest imagination cannot transcend 'known'
symbolism, which is why there are some things that defy definition. One of these is
'consciousness' itself.

consciousness: Chitta or chaitanya.

1) A synonym for mind-stuff, chitta; or

2) the condition or power of perception, awareness, apprehension.

There are myriad gradations of consciousness, from the simple sentience of inanimate matter to
the consciousness of basic life forms, to the higher consciousness of human embodiment, to
omniscient states of superconsciousness, leading to immersion in the One universal
consciousness, Parashakti. Chaitanya and chitta can name both individual consciousness and
universal consciousness.

Modifiers indicate the level of awareness, e.g.,

- vyashti chaitanya, "individual consciousness;"
- buddhi chitta, "intellectual consciousness;"
- Sivachaitanya, "God consciousness."

Five classical "states" of awareness are discussed in scripture:

1) wakefulness (jagrat),
2) "dream" (svapna) or astral consciousness,
3) "deep sleep" (sushupti) or subsuperconsciousness,
4) the superconscious state beyond (turiya "fourth") and
5) the utterly transcendent state called turiyatita ("beyond the fourth").

Consciousness:
This is a term with a very wide range of interpretations. However commonly referred meanings
allude to perceptual consciousness, and introspective consciousness. Introspective consciousness
seems so special because it gives inner awareness of self, and memory of other mental events.
Also includes perceiving one's own perceptions with attributes (like good, bad, positive etc.).
Normally associated to 'animated matter' and all forms exhibiting 'life'.

Consciousness is a quality of the mind generally regarded to comprise such key features as
subjectivity, self-awareness, sentience, sapience, and the ability to perceive the relationship
between oneself and one's environment. It is a subject of much research in philosophy of mind,
psychology, neurology, and cognitive science. Some philosophers divide consciousness into

processing of the things in experience (Block 2004). Others consider ...

Consciousness: Theosophy Occultism Mysticism Dictionary on Consciousness

A Theosophical definition of Consciousness :

Consciousness
In all its forms and protean manifestations, consciousness is spirit-matter - force and matter, or
spirit and substance, are one - hence consciousness is the finest and loftiest form of energy, is the
root of all things, and is coextensive with kosmic space. It is, therefore, the foundation and the
essence of gods, of monads, and of atoms - the three generalized degrees, kosmically speaking,
of the universe.

A natural corollary from this is that the universe therefore is imbodied consciousness, or much
more correctly we should call it a quasi-infinite aggregate of imbodied consciousnesses.

Consciousness: Can Consciousness Be Reduced To Matter?

Francis Crick, the co-discoverer of the DNA, presented what he called the “Astonishing Hypothesis”:
Human behaviour is merely the sum of a vast assembly of nerve cells and their associated
molecules. But, can human consciousness be explained in physical terms?

Those who embrace challenge the validity of Crick’s astonishing hypothesis.

Scientists, however, claim that mind and consciousness are only a pack of neurons, made up of a
chain of lifeless molecules and atoms. Therefore, it can be fully explained in terms of “lower level
sciences” of chemistry and physics.

Consciousness: The Fourth State Of Consciousness

Indian philosophy’s focus is to determine the nature of that spirit or self which is the centre of
everything, the animating force which makes a person alive, alert and aware.

It is consciousness, variously called the Self, Knower, Seer, Experiencer or the Witness. It knows
no distinction of gender, nationality, race or religion. It is the unchanging and all-pervading,
transcending the limitations of time and space, birth and death. Ultimately it is the substratum or
essence of the entire manifest universe.

Consciousness: Spiritual - Theosophy Dictionary on Consciousness

Consciousness (from Latin conscio knowing with, knowing together)

The active state of spirit or the supreme fundamental in manifested existence. Like light,
consciousness can become manifest only by means of a vehicle, and it can have various degrees of
manifestation according to the planes.

http://www.experiencefestival.com/consciousness Page 5 of 7
Consciousness 06/12/10 1:51 AM

Individual consciousness originates in the Logos of any hierarchy. Every manifested entity is
conscious to some degree, and is an expression of divine consciousness or spirit. Buddhi is said to
be latent spiritual consciousness which becomes manifest intellectually in manas, so far as the
human constitution goes (SD 2:275). Human consciousness is also closely linked to the senses.

The term consciousness is often used as alternative to spirit, as where it is said that consciousness
and matter are the two aspects of parabrahman or that consciousness is the purest form of cosmic
force; yet, strictly speaking, consciousness is an attribute of active spirit. It is sometimes called the
universal life, the kosmic force-substance.

The relative use of the word enables us to speak of states or degrees of consciousness, according
to the state in which the essence is manifested on one plane or another; or to call one state
unconscious by contrast with another, as when we compare waking consciousness with the
consciousness of sleep or trance.

The Dual Nature Of Our Consciousness
All things that have consciousness may be divided into two categories - those that move and

Consciousness: What is Consciousness?

What raises us above other known sentient beings is our ability to be conscious of our own
consciousness. But what does this mean, scientifically?

“It is now widely accepted that all knowledge, from the beginning of time, is available to each of
us, an intelligence that is carried at the cellular, subatomic level. Highly evolved individuals who
have touched the hem of the eternal and communed with the infinite through their higher
consciousness, made that quantum leap but have been unable to transfer their understanding due
to limitations imposed by language. Because language is incomplete and fragmentary, merely
registering a stage in the average advance beyond the ape mentality. But all of us do have flashes
of insight beyond meanings already stabilized in etymology and grammar.”

Consciousness: Mapping the Physical and Mental Universes

If the manual of life is encoded in our DNA, where do we look to find the blueprint of
consciousness? This was a subject that fascinated Francis Crick, who, along with James Watson,
discovered the double-helix structure of DNA 50 years ago.

Engrossed in the mysterious relationship between mind and body, Crick later felt impelled to turn
his attention from matter to mind and from biology to philosophy Ñ but he persisted in believing
that one day, consciousness could be explained in biological terms, using the tools of neuroscience.
