Globally 3 out of every 4 hectares of land has been


altered from the natural state according to risk
assessment report on land degradation by UNCCD.

UNCCD’s core agenda is reversing land degradation and


its outcomes while accelerating positive achievements
for people and for ecosystems with a view to achieving
Sustainable Development Goals.

India’s International Commitments


• Nationally Determined Contribution: additional 2.5 - 3 billion tons of
CO2eq. by 2030 through additional forest and tree cover
• Bonn Challenge: restoring 21 mha of degraded and deforested land by
2030
• SDGs: particularly no poverty, zero hunger, climate action, life on land
and combating desertification
• Landscape restoration will help India regain ecological integrity and
improve well-being of 700 million rural people

Certification of Natural
Resources to Combat
Desertification and
Restoring Landscapes
Certification of natural resources enhances the
sustainability of forests, agroforests, urban forests
and NWFPs, thereby reducing the rate of land
Areas of work
degradation, helping in combating desertification and
achieving Land Degradation Neutrality (LDN). Sustainability Policy
Standards Advocacy
Forest certification contributes to promoting SFM,
REDD+, SDGs, NDC commitments and meeting the
objectives of various international commitments
under the UNFCCC, UNCCD and UNCBD, etc.

NCCF has launched Forest Management Certification


Standard, which is country specific and globally
benchmarked and endorsed by the Programme for
the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

NCCF’s Trees Outside Forests Certification Standard is Natural Resource Conservation Multi Stakeholder Capacity Building
shortly being launched. Development of other & Management Engagement
sustainability certification standards and a Carbon
Registry-India are under preparation. Highlights of
these sustainability standards and CR-I will be
presented in the side event.
