QUESTION ONE
2𝑚𝑚
(a) (i) Simplify: 3𝑝2 ¯²
(ii) Simplify: 10𝑥 2 − 𝑥 3 (5𝑥 − 7) − (4𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 2 )
(iii) The length of a rectangular building is 5 metres more than its width. The area
of the building is 275m2.
Use algebraic methods to find the length of the building.

(c) The local newspaper “Hastings Newsbreak” has a circulation of 30 000 and
charges 65c for each paper. Due to increasing production costs, the price of the
newspaper is to rise. Past experience indicates that for each 10c rise in price, the
circulation will decrease by 2000.
The increased (new) price per copy can be modelled by a function of the form
𝑝 = 0.65 + 0.10𝑥
Where 𝑝 is the new price and 𝑥 is the number of 10c price increases
(i) Write an expression to represent the reduced circulation after a price
increase.
The total income received by the newspaper is related to its price and the number
of papers sold.
(ii) Find the expression for the total income earned by the newspaper.
AS91261 6 MX2.6X16
The newspaper hopes to achieve an income of $19 350 with the new price.
(iii) Find the increased price of the newspaper to obtain an income of $19 350.
(Explain what you are calculating)

QUESTION THREE
(a) (i) Find the value of 𝑥 if: 𝑥 = 𝑙𝑙𝑙4 64
(ii) Solve: 𝑙𝑙𝑙𝑥 512 = 3
(b) (i) Solve for 𝑥 : 2 3𝑥+1 = 16

(c) Dave’s family owns an orchard business and he has watched it increase in value.
They purchased it for $55 000 in 1985 and it has increased in value by 10.5% per
year since. Dave wants to know when it is likely to be worth four million dollars.
(i) The value of the farm is given by the equation
Value ($ 000) = 55 (1.105)𝑇
Where T is the number of years and the Value is in $1000s.
Find when Dave’s family business is likely to be worth four million dollars
AS91261 9 MX2.6X16
Dave believes that the family business will make him wealthy in coming
years. He estimates that when it is worth 20 times his current family
income, they should sell it and live off the money for the next 20 years.
However, his family think that Dave has not taken inflation into account.
The family income now is $65 000 and is increasing at 2% per year as
given by the formula below
Income (000) = 65 (1.020)T
Where T is the number of years into the future
The business is currently valued at $550 000 and is increasing
as shown by
Value (000) = 550 (1.105)T
Where T is the number of years into the future
(ii) Calculate when the business value will be 20 times the family
income.
