Dry Steam System
DRY STEAM SYSTEM
- Underground steam flows directly to a turbine to drive a generator
that produces electricity
- 7,000 to 10,000 ft deep
- At least 150 to 180 ⁰C
- Capacity: 55 to 110 MW
10
DRY STEAM SYSTEM
- No separation is necessary because wells only produce steam
11
Single Flash SYSTEM
- High pressure liquid
- Temperature greater than 190⁰C
- Expanded through an expansion valve
- Two phase flow is directed to a separator
- “Flash” or rapid vaporization happens in the tank held a much lower
pressure than the fluid.
12
Double Flash CLOSED-LOOP SYSTEM
- Same with single flash
- Remaining liquid is flashed again in a second tank (Double flash) to
extract more energy
- Produces 15 to 25% more power than a single flash
- Capacity: 4.7 MW – 110 MW
- Mineral content of water becomes concentrated
14
Binary Cycle SYSTEM
- A secondary liquid is used instead of water
- Temperature lower than 150⁰C is possible
16
Binary Cycle SYSTEM
- Working Fluid:
• Propane
• Isobutane (R600a)
• Isopentane
• Ammonia/Water mixture
• Fluoroethane (R161)
