Unsupported Steel Beam Design

This document summarizes the analysis and design of a laterally unsupported steel beam with a 4m span. The beam is designed using the working stress method and verified using STAAD Pro software. The working stress method selects an ISMB 400 section which satisfies the required section modulus and bending stress. STAAD analysis finds the maximum deflection is 2.97mm, bending moment is 73.81 kNm, and shear force is 73.81 kN, all of which satisfy code requirements.

ANALYSIS & DESIGN OF LATERALLY UNSUPPORTED STEEL BEAM

********

Data:

Steel Beam Span : 4.0m

Support condition : Simply supported
Yield stress of Steel fy : 250N/mm2
Load on the Beam : 24KN/m (udl)
Section assumed : I section
Assumption : Beam is laterally unsupported
Allowable Bending stress in compression & Tension : < 0.66 fy i.e<165N/mm 2
Average shear stress : 0.40 fy

Manual Design : (Working Stress Method)

1.Load acting on the beam (udl) excluding self weight =24 KN/m

Self weight of beam= 0.5KN/m

Total design Load w =24.5KN/m

2. Calculation of Max. Bending Moment & Max. Shear Force

Max. Bending Moment M=wl2/8= 24.5 x 42 /8= 49 KN.m

Maximum Shear Force =wl/2= 24.5 x 4/2= 49 KN

3. Modulus of section required Z = M/ σbc where Z= Section modulus of the beam.

M= Max. Bending moment ; σbc = Reduced permissible bending stress in

Compression i.e.<165 N/mm2

Let us assume σbc =110N/mm2

Z required = 49 x 106/110=445.45 x 103 mm3 or 445.45cm3

4. Based on section modulus choose a suitable section greater than or

equal to calculated section modulus of section.

Let us try ISMB 300 @ 44.2Kg/m Z provided=573.6 cm3 > 445.45cm3

Properties of ISMB 300 Zxx=573.6cm3 Ixx=8603.6cm4

D=300mm Thickness of flange T=12.4mm

t= thickness of web=7.5mm h2=29.25mm ryy=28.4mm

5. Calculate Permissible bending stress from appropriate Table from IS 800-2007

(Table 6.1A to 6.1F)

d1=D-2h2 =300-2x29.25=241.5mm

D/T=300/12.4=24.19

l/ry=4000/28.4=140.84

T/t=12.4/7.5=1.65 <2

d1/t=241.5/7.5=32.2 <85 fy=250 Use Table 6.1(B)

For D/T=24.19 l/ry=140.84 for fy=250 σbc=103.71 MPa

6. Calculate Moment of resistance of the section Mr= σbc Z

Mr= 103.71 x 573.6 x103=57.5 x106 N.mm =57.5 KN.m

Actual load on beam=w=24 +0.442KN/m=24.442KN/m

Max. Bending moment= wl2/8=24.442 x42/8=48.884 KN.m say 48.9KN.m

Max. shear force V= wl/2=24.442 x4/2=48.884 KN

Mr=59.5KN.m > 48.9KN.m Ok.

7. Check for shear :

Ʈbd= V/D t= 48.884 x 103/300 x 7.5=21.73 N/mm2 < 0.40 fy=100N/mm2 Ok.

8. Check for Deflection:

dall.= span/325=4000/325=12.30mm

dcal.= (5/384) x wl4/EI =(5/384) x 24.442 x (4 x 103)/(2x105 x 8603.6 x 104)

=4.735 mm < 12.3mm Hence Ok.

Note: In the STAAD Design if ISMB 300, ISMB 350 are given, the section fail in web

thickness. Hence ISMB 400 is suggested and found to be safe.
