LABORATORY ACTIVITY No. 2 - COCKROACH DISSECTION

The document provides instructions for a student laboratory activity to dissect a cockroach and observe its internal anatomy and organ systems. Students are directed to carefully follow the printed procedures, which involve pinning down the specimen and making incisions to expose the thoracic and abdominal cavities. Students will then remove fat bodies and tracheae to view the internal organs, compare cockroach and human anatomy, and properly dispose of specimens. Safety precautions like wearing personal protective equipment are emphasized.

COCKROACH DISSECTION

Introduction:
Cockroaches belongs to the class insect (insects), which are very diverse group of animals
consisting 4/5 of known species. Studying roaches in the laboratory provides a great way for students to
experience hands-on learning, interdisciplinary activities, and exploration of the insect world. Roaches
are great to observe and teach the basic concepts of nutrition, social structure, breeding, animal care, and
more

Objectives:
 Investigate the anatomy and organ systems of a cockroach.
 To observe the relationship between organ structure and function.
 To compare cockroach and human anatomy to better understand body systems

Kindly read the instruction or procedures carefully.

Laboratory Equipment:
Cockroach (Blattella asahinai) Lab gown
Dissecting kit Gloves
Dissecting pan Mask
Water Pins

Procedure:
1. Hold the specimen with your left hand and clip the wings.
2. Fix the specimen in a dorsal position on a dissecting tray with the help of pins passing through
abdominal sterna and coxa of legs.
3. Cut the lateral membrane (pleura) between the terga and sterna of the thorax and abdomen with a
blade.
4. Posteriorly the two incisions should meet at the hindmost end of the abdomen. Proceed forward
up to the anterior end of the thorax.
5. Give a transverse incision along the anterior border of the first thoracic segment and carefully
remove the terga.
6. The thoracic and the abdominal cavity are exposed.
7. Put clear water in the tray. Remove fat bodies and tracheae to expose internal organs.
8. Once you have observed the structures of the earthworm, dispose of the specimen in accordance
with local guidelines and your teacher’s instructions

NOTE: CLEAN UP YOUR WORK AREA, MAKE SURE ALL THE EQUIPMENT USED WERE
RETURNED TO THEIR APPROPRIEATE PLACES.
