Weddings in Ecuador

The document discusses weddings in Ecuador. It begins by noting that weddings are important social events that join families. Legally, people can marry at age 18, with the average ages being 32 for men and 29 for women. Traditionally, weddings involved the man asking the woman's parents for permission, an exchange of vows at the civil registry followed by the church, and large celebrations. Nowadays, customs have changed somewhat, with some couples not asking parents' permission if independent, and couples paying for their own weddings rather than families. However, weddings remain important social occasions.

Weddings in Ecuador

Weddings are very important occasions in my country. They are vital social events
which join two families together to celebrate the new marriage. In this essay, I will
describe the law concerning marriage where I live, outline the customs and traditions of
a typical wedding, and show how weddings have changed in recent years.

People can legally marriage from the age of 18. The average age of people who get
married in Ecuador is about 32 for men, and 29 for women. T carry out the wedding, the
first thing to do is go to the Civil Registry to schedule the Marriage with a minimum of
15 days and a maximum of one month in advance of the date you want to celebrate the
Wedding, for which the presence of two witnesses is necessary. If you also want an
ecclesiastical wedding, the date must be reserved at least 1 month before the ceremony.
The couple must be baptized, have made the confirmation, and have completed the
Premarital Course. They also need two Godparents who must be a couple married by
the Church.

In the past, a traditional marriage in Ecuador started when the man formally asked
the woman’s parents to give them the permission to get married, and they decided if it
was convenient or not. The wedding commonly took place at the church decided by the
couple and their parents. It was tradition for the groom to buy the wedding dress and the
wedding rings, but for the bride’s parents to pay for everything else. First, the couple
had to get married at the Civil Registry, they exchanged rings, kissed each other, and
sign the marriage certificate. Ad they used to go to eat to celebrate. A couple of days
later, the bride’s father walked with her daughter in the church and (would) gave away
her to the groom. The couple exchanged rings and kissed. When they left the church,
guests threw rice at them to symbolize abundance. After that, they went to the house of
the bride or the groom (the one that was bigger), where the celebration took place. The
godparents used to furnish the house of the couple, or to organize the celebration for
them, depending on their financial possibilities. The guests brough wedding presents for
the new home, and everybody danced and ate.

Nowadays, people keep just the essence of this celebration, some man do not ask the
woman’s parents because she does not live with them or because she is independent.
Also, the couple is who pays everything for the wedding. But not all of them have a
ecclesiastical marriage, just a Civil one. In addition, guests don’t bring only presents,
some of them prefer to give money for the couple.
