SERETIDE

This document summarizes information about the drug Seretide, which contains fluticasone propionate and salmeterol. Seretide is a combination drug used to treat reversible obstructive airways disease (ROAD) including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by selectively activating beta 2 adrenergic receptors to cause bronchodilation and block the release of allergic mediators. Recommended doses vary depending on the device, age, and condition being treated. Potential side effects include infections of the respiratory tract and mouth, as well as headaches, nausea, and muscle/bone pain. Nurses should monitor for allergic reactions and adverse effects, ensure proper use and storage of the

Mechanism of action: Selectively activates beta 2 adrenergic receptors which results

in bronchodilation and block the release of allergic mediators from the mast cell in the
respiratory tract.
Indication: Regular treatment of reversible obstructive airways disease (ROAD)
including asthma where use combination therapy (bronchodilator and inhaled
corticosteroids) is appropriate, and COPD including chronic bronchitis & emphysema.
Contraindication: Hypersensitivity to sympathomimetics, tachydysrhythmias, severe
cardiac disease, monotherapy treatment of asthma, milk protein, primary treatment in
status asthmaticus, acute bronchospasm

Nursing Intervention:
1. Assess patient for severe allergic reaction notify health care professional
immediately if these occur.
2. Follow Doctor’s prescription accordingly
3. Tell the patient to keep this drug in a dry place away from heat and sunlight.
4. Assess patient respiratory condition starting therapy
5. Inform the patient to not use drug if acute bronchospasm occurs.
6. Instruct the patient in how to use inhaler, to use it once daily at the same time
each day.
7. Asses for severe milk allergies; may be allergic to fluticasone vilanterol.
8. Inform patient of increased risk of pneumonia. Advise patient to notify health
care professional if fever, chills, change in sputum color, increased cough, or
increase in breathing problems occur.
9. Instruct the patient to rinse her mouth with water after each time you use your
Seretide inhaler.
10. Instruct the patient to use dust-proof covers on the mattress and pillows. Wash
the sheets and blankets on the bed once a week in very hot water.
