that shape the theme in a paragraph summary.
Evidence of Mastery (Measurable):
How will you assess if your student achieved mastery of the lesson objective?
Determine the type of demonstration/activity the student will use to demonstrate mastery of the objective.
What is the condition and degree, the setting or situation in which the student will be able to express the depth and extent of
learning?
What is an exemplar student response with the level of detail you expect to see?
Students will analyze the theme of a text and how it emerges and provide three events that
shape the theme in a paragraph summary.

Opening Activity
How will you activate student interest?
How will you connect and uncover prior knowledge?
How will you present the lesson objective in an engaging and student-friendly way?
On the day before the lesson, I will ask students to bring in a short story/fairytale for next class.
I will tell them that the story can be printed out or it can be on their school iPad/Laptop.
I will begin my asking students what they think theme/central idea of a text is.
I will quickly explain what theme/central idea is and I will start asking students what they think
the theme/central idea is of the short story they brought in.

theme/central idea with a book we have been
reading and analyzing in class.
I will model by writing 3 events from the book
as evidence of the theme on the white board
for everyone to see. I will explain in detail why
I believe each event shapes the theme. I will
also add a quotation from the book as further
evidence of theme/central idea.
During this process, I will ask open-ended
questions to make sure students are
understanding.

Once students are done writing their answers,
they will begin telling their group members
what their story is and the 3 key events they

their answers.
I will have a visual on the board of student’s

Closing Activity:

Summarizing and stating the significance of what they learned.
Acknowledge the new information that was added/developed within their schema.
At the end of the lesson, I will pass out an uncommon short story to every student. With this short story, I
will ask them to find 3 events that shape the theme and then create a 6-8 sentence objective summary
on it.
Depending on the time, I will give them time to read the story in class and begin the google forms quiz. If
we are running late on time, I will have them complete the google forms quiz the following day in class.
I will also have students reflect on what they learned in their class journals. This will be a journal I will
check weekly for participation. Students will be encouraged to write any questions they still have in their
journals so that I can address them once I read them.
